I always used Hemingway as an instructive, if extreme, example. Hemingway and Gertrude Stein's "workshop"? A fraught, turbulent relationship between massive egos that, in their correspondence, focused like a laser on the writing. They left hating each other, but they left with better books.

This isn't always moral failing. People with good intentions can get loosey-goosey with their language and turn noble attempts at artistic comradery into circular firing squads. But I've seen workshops function, and a careful facilitator can steer almost any group towards constructive critique.

In fandom, the reader's final opinion is the whole point; not a side-effect of discussions about craft and intention. Fandom dresses the verdict up, gives it flair - the goal of a comment becomes inflating the ego of the commenter. Crafting witty barbs becomes more important than improvement.

Workshops are, at their best, pathology. Point directly to the perceived problem. Trace the cause-effect of a reader's reaction. The opinion or judgement at the end of that process is, by far, the least useful part. It should be expressed as clinically and concisely as possible.

Fandom-y reviews are a great way to turn your supportive writing circle into multiple cliques of petty grudges, with all the constructive criticism of high school cafeteria gossip. The tone of the entire group gets more conservative, more homogenous, and less useful for creation.

Intention doesn't matter if the language is aggro. If members of the circle gleefully attack a writer for taking a big swing - extrapolating perceived flaws in the writing to moral failings or permanent marks of incompetence (as if revision were not the point)...it turns everyone off.

The language of "fandom" rewards bombast. The language of critique exists to hone critique. "Constructive" criticism is not an attitude: it's a set of tools and procedures. If you aren't using the tools and just vibe about "bad flow," criticism can't be constructive. It can't even be identified.

My background is English education. I've been part of and facilitated a lot of creative writing workshops over the years. The biggest single mistake people make setting up these communities online is allowing the language of fandom to infect the discourse.
