This week’s #TopTweetTuesday inspired by the prompt of humour. Thank you to @matthewmcsmith.bsky.social and @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social 🎹
Sisyphus, Unfortunately

                        a piano uphill,
            They push

                        Sisyphus with better hats.

            But the piano disagrees.

Left, they push.
                        Right, it rolls.

                        A duet in gravity.

                                    Laurel slips;
                                                Hardy follows—
                        entropy in bowlers.

            (a pause)

                        At the summit,
                                    they breathe.

                        The piano rolls
                                    back down.

                        Again, says Laurel.

            Below, Sisyphus
                        checks his watch,
                                    sees the piano coming –

                                                            and ducks.

I continue to write these fragments as if they might lift me. But writing is not a cloud. Writing is stone. And yet, when I arrange these stones carefully, they sometimes rise. – Cloudlets amzn.eu/d/0a2ku8RC

New from Heavy Cloud Press – Cloudlets is a memoir in fragments. Written as brief, drifting observations, these cloudlets map the interior weather of a mind learning to endure. Part autobiography, part philosophical notebook, part poetic experiment. amzn.eu/d/010uDIMY

An autumnal one for #TopTweetTuesday. Thank you to @matthewmcsmith.bsky.social and @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social ✨
EARLIER NOW

Greenish constellations
touched with rust

colonise the corner
of the window frame.

Curtain at half-mast
rehearsing the dark.

Sycamore key smudged
against glass.

The last halo of evening
is earlier now.

Already autopsied,
the light obscures her face

as if it knows
where her sun will set.

inside cupped
hands the Lynher
slips to silt

beneath my tongue
seed breaks open
into wind

my shadow drifts
through mizzle
over killas

inside my chest
a forest folds
furze-dark wings

in my ear
night turns waves
between stone

thermal roots
loosen grip
on the sky

the air bends
around a single
gull-feather

behind my eyes
the horizon opens
its zawn

between my ribs
a moth sleeps
in moorgloom

under my skin
the late tide
enters another adit

in my throat
granite crag hums
its buried nick

cumulus spits
its silver into
rootwater

The wheel turns slow, white horse, blue horse,
wobbling towards Land’s End. You follow
the yellow dog’s tracks into the earth,
where old boundaries have gone to ground.

Kernow light glides back, Red Galver burns
in the bones of hills, Chapel Carn Brea scraped
by sun, Zennor cut by moon. At the ragged coast
land and sea hold their silence.

And on the turning wheel, the deepening —
earth, water, sky running together,
colour left behind, a handprint in stone.

Legs cling
to patient ribs of horse,
hot in the midday
jouissance.

Ahead, mother is light,
threading through beech.
Father is the ground
blunt as a knuckle.

Unblinking,
these elder eyes face
the unheld green
beyond the
hemming grey.

I am shadow stitched
between each of their breaths.
With knuckles as white
as the trail behind us.

One key, wind-flung from indigo, rooted
in garden-void, grew where no root grew–
now grey, moss-fledged, black-budded,
both boughs in flower and in fruit.

Alone she stands, no sister-crown close by,
Venus of the wood, tilting towards day-star’s eye.

She calls the bullfinch, owl, beetle-brood
to shelter, weep, hide, grow, watch, admire;
her roots run deep, her keys spin down
like sparks flung from piano-fire.

At her fissured foot, some other door
stands ajar on light I've no name for.

I contain the failure of cellular energy pathways,
the mitochondria folding like tired horses.
I am the moment after poetry —
I am brightness draining from the room,
I am muscles gone to ruin,
I am the amphitheatre emptied of its crowd,

This is not transgression.
This is a simple night of living.
I have borne it. I am large enough to bear it again.

For #TopTweetTuesday, a revisit of my Elizabeth Bishop take from last week, now respirited through Wallace Stevens. Thank you to @matthewmcsmith.bsky.social and @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social for top prompt setting.
Cord in the Room of the Actual

Not the green that mattered
but the mattering of green,
the way the window ratifies

what was always leaning there.
The engine house of the infinite
have strung theorems through granite.

The door considered standing
and found it supreme.
The cord runs from necessity

to necessity: envoy of the unseen,
its hum the Atlantic argument.
The frame excludes.

What happens to the left
happens as the gorse:
in yellow. Unannounced.

For #TopTweetTuesday, a poem written after Elizabeth Bishop, notably her painting Interior with Extension Cord. Thank you to @matthewmcsmith.bsky.social and @blackboughpoetry.bsky.social for hosting.
Undercurrent
(After Elizabeth Bishop’s Interior with Extension Cord)

The cord pulls north across the ceiling,
taut, humming. I trace it.

Not everything erased should be.
Some lines hold the room together,
some conduct what we need.

The door stands open
onto green, untidily alive.
Something turning towards the light,
persisting,

happening, as most things do,
just off frame.
