Once a year, politicians leave Westminster for party conference. Power gets on the train to Liverpool but never leaves the conference centre. Communities need power in their hands all year round. Don't take your foot off the gas, Andy. The next stop for devolution: community power. 🧵1/2

Forgive the dry name, but the upcoming ‘neighbourhood governance arrangements’ could be transformational in giving us more power over the decisions that shape the places we call home. It's been brilliant to work on this series with @right-here.org @theyoungfdn.bsky.social. Watch below 🎬

Hear it from Christiana Figueres: holding systemic risk and systemic opportunity together can give us the energy to move forward. 1 year ago, Christiana Figueres, @outrageoptimism.bsky.social, spoke at our symposium about taking a systems approach to climate risk. youtu.be/B-246r-noxo?...
Two screenshots of Christiana delivering her keynote speech. The caption on the first frame reads: "Becoming more aware of systemic risk should, could, ought to make us also more aware of systemic opportunities."

The caption on the second frame reads: "How do we bring them together to conform the basis for
the energy that we need to move forward is sort of my constant mantra."

An extraordinary story of transformation is happening in Andhra Pradesh, India. Around 1.8million farmers are transitioning from chemical-intensive farming to natural farming. The impact it's had on farmers, the land, and the climate is really impressive. #APCNF 💫

Unlock Democracy @unlockdemocracy.bsky.social · 29/04/2026
Today is the last day hereditary peers will be able to sit in the House of Lords. Some will cling on to a seat in Parliament as life peers, but lawmaking by birthright, that ends today. Now for an upper chamber fit for the 21st century. unlockdemocracy.substack.com/p/hereditary...

Hereditary peers to go - this must be just the start
A second chamber that relies on the patronage of Prime Ministers through life peerages is hardly a giant leap forward over the descendants of men given hereditary peerages hundreds of years ago!

Now in law, the Community Right to Buy is a brilliant win for local people who want to protect the places they love for the good of their communities. Just needs funding and support to ensure people can actually use the Right. See what the Bill failed on and where the next opportunity lies.👇

Given the worsening climate and ecological crises facing us, this challenge from @asranetwork.org to consider systemic risk from a more-than-human perspective is very timely and urgently needed. 🐆🍄

Always amazed by how much life on Earth depends on underground fungi – 80% of all plants! From food crops to forests. On #UnderEarthDay, we've got to do better at getting fungi into conservation plans, climate action & biodiversity loss strategies. 🍄 Great take on #EarthDay @spun.earth!

Today, over 350 community leaders delivered a stark warning: our democracy is in crisis. Ahead of the anniversary of last year’s riots, we handed in an open letter to No.10 warning that without action to address widespread feelings of disempowerment, we could see more social unrest. 🧵 1/3

Christiana Figueres' tip for thinking about systems: Have a spider web in your head when looking at a system to understand which threads are being pulled and remember that it’s constantly a dynamic. We can't control a system, we can only influence & understand the interconnections. 🕸️
