My article 'Synagoga as Mother in Ekbert of Schönau's Stimulus amoris' is out now in JMRC 52.2, on a striking and influential medieval text that has gone understudied. Cn medieval antisemitism intersecting with misogynistic ideas of fertility/infertility and birth (abstract in picture) 1/
Edinburgh CRC MS 113, open at ff. 241v-242r.'Synagoga as Mother in Ekbert of Schönau’s Stimulus amoris', abstract (and first page of PDF version): This article proposes that the (understudied) twelfth-century Stimulus amoris text, which notably describes Christ’s body as aborted matter from the womb of his mother Synagoga, was a key influence on later medieval devotional culture and its gendered anti-Judaism, and accordingly the article provides a close analysis of this striking passage. The article discusses the text’s usage of material from Isaiah, Job, and the Gospel of John, exploring the implications of each according to Christian typology and the supersession, and argues that Christ and Synagoga should in this way be recognized as an alternate, but equally important, form of the “Jesus as Mother” trope usually applied to Christ and Mary.

Finished the proofs! I am yet to type up the corrections (hence the folded-over pages) but the meticulous re-reading is done. Find re-reading my own stuff v difficult, but feeling OK about it - mostly I hope it might give someone a similar experience of curiosity & discovery as I felt writing it.

Thank you so much @lizzieswarbrick.bsky.social for a brilliant evening in Rosslyn chapel on Tuesday, which I can't stop thinking about!
An intricately-carved fifteenth-century chapel ceiling, showing multiple arches over the altar. An ornately-decorated fifteenth-century chapel interior, showing carvings on the ceiling and an unusual pillar with curved vine decoration, known as the 'apprentice pillar'. A carved boss above the altar, showing a 'green man' (probably added, copied or restored in the nineteenth century).
