He really was terrible tonight. The difference between him and Messi is that CR7 was the physical specimen and Messi was the footballer. When CR7’s body let him down the footballer that was left was underwhelming. Messi never had that. He’s just remained a brilliant footballer.

Rice will get man of the match for England in most papers tomorrow. And that’s part of the problem. We don’t see the limitations of the players we fete so highly at international level (see also, Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes). That ref was way out of his depth though.
