I have fond memories of the 25th Anniversary Symphony concert in LA, particularly Koji Kondo's piano solo. (I hope this old video embeds ok, saved during its brief time on YouTube. I think it's the only one from the LA show, there are more from London. Gets loud with cheering, rotates to landscape.)

Good chance to show off my assorted Ultra 64 swag, happy birthday N64!
"Waiting for Nintendo Ultra 64" t-shirt, Ultra 64 logo embroidered baseball cap and shirt, in front of a Nintendo 64 neon store sign (unlighted). Not sure how legit the embroidered stuff is.

I thought of a funny game mechanic interaction, which motivated me to pull together a rough entry for the GMTK Game Jam. It made the top quartile on Creativity and Enjoyment ratings, not too shabby. Rewrite Machine CD-ROM, January 1998 This is an artifact of the Nintendo Power system of convenience store kiosks, for selling Super Famicom (later Game Boy) games on rewritable cartridges. This disc would presumably have loaded kiosks with 104 SFC games in early 1998. Info: redump.info/disc/131221

Game idea: Fitting together puzzle pieces, but some are missing. You're able to create your own pieces, to fill in spaces where you think you need things to connect. The trick is you need to make a system of pieces that only fits together where it makes sense.

Game idea: Metroidvania with no fixed traversal powers. Instead you scan obstacles in the world as you encounter them. Then, when you have observed enough that a clear pattern is established, you can request to synthesize a spell that gives you a new ability. #gamedesign

Years ago I ripped all Quest 64's music data and applied modern soundfonts (my goal was to upload a full "orchestral" OST to youtube). I decided to add little jokey animations to each track, but I got carried away, which doomed the project to never be completed. Here's the battle theme.

Game idea: Magic lesson warns you to only cast a spell in a wide open area outside, never indoors. The spell has chaotic interactions with nearby objects, usually fatal, as if missing initialization or clobbering memory. Exploit this at carefully chosen locations to effect prodigious workings.

Game idea: Once Bitten, Twice Shy. Escort an NPC across levels. They start really naive and will fling themselves into traps. They'll learn to avoid that hazard when resurrected. But accumulated lessons can eventually immobilize them, so protect them early on to preserve some capacity for risk.

Programming game ideas: Bug manifests as: - Ghost, solve its unfinished business to banish it. - Trickster, reveal its name to break a curse. - RPG enemy, weak to a debugging strategy. Sent by your archnemesis, tired self from last week. What would it look like to debug with a conversation tree?

Game idea: Reordering a program that has had all tokens put in sorted order. Could work on various levels, bits or bytes of machine code, assembly instructions, lines of a higher level language (probably indent or begin/end keyword based). Maybe some are unreachable garbage. See: Parsons Problems

Game idea: "The whole garden may be read as a book, or as a spell, which is, after all, the same thing. If you knew the words, you could speak what the garden says and you would then be able to control one of the countless forces that act in the sublunar world." - Foucault's Pendulum

Game idea: Machine Code Roguelike. You can reprogram the world to do magic, but if you trip any security features you die, getting a new, randomly generated world, with new architecture and security rules. Maybe construct a higher level interpreter, port into each run as you discover its structure.
