A huge moment🎉 The PH community came together with the Minister @sharonhodgsonmp.bsky.social to mark the passage of the Tobacco and Vapes Bill yesterday – and today it became an Act. Proud to stand alongside so many dedicated colleagues who made this happen. Truly a gift to future generations

Great to join the South East Tobacco Alliance as their roadshow visited Surrey. Their region-wide campaign is telling smokers about the mental health benefits of quitting and busting the myths that smoking improves mental health. Lots more to come in the next few weeks

Progress has also been greatest in R&M occupations compared to managerial though not enough to close the gap
shows differences in smoking rates by occupational group 2011 compared to 2024 with routine and manual occupations seeing the biggest drop but still with higher rates of smoking in 2024 compared to managerial groups

Progress is not equal though. Biggest drops among the youngest - boding well for the success of the smokefree generation policy:
Graph shows differences in smoking rates by age group 2011 compared to 2024. It shows 18-24 year olds have the biggest decline over this time and 65+ the smallest.

New official Gov data on smoking out this morning for 2024. It's good news - smoking rates continue to fall. Vaping is now more common than smoking, likely part of the reason for the continue drops.

Fewer young Europeans are drinking alcohol in part due to health concerns but the CEO of Diagio isn't buying it. Definitely not that people feel better when they don't consume your product... www.reuters.com/business/eur...

Stumbled across a map of tobacco retail licence distribution in England in 1634 (for those wondering, the distribution in 21stC would be a blank map as no licence is needed to sell tobacco until government passes Tobacco and Vapes Bill)

Stop smoking services have helped tackle inequality, generally breaking the ‘inverse care law’ – whereby health services are more likely to reach advantaged parts of the population than disadvantaged – and they also see similar levels of success across different groups in the population.

Services help people from all walks of life and of all ages but are more likely to see people in middle age. Interestingly, quit success increases with age- proof that it’s never too late to stop.

One big change since the pandemic? The rise of remote support. It’s cost-effective, fits more easily into people’s lives, and delivers similar success rates to face-to-face support.

There are lots of different ways to quit with services. Most do it with some kind of medication or nicotine vapes – and those people are most likely to succeed

Imperial profits up though volumes fall. House always seems to win when you're the tobacco industry. Stopping the immense profitability of this 'industry' should be a government priority: www.thetimes.com/business-mon...

Yesterday I spoke at the launch of a book by www.booksbeyondwords.co.uk to help people with learning disability to quit smoking. Fascinating to see how it was co-produced and the need for it. NHS, social care and pubic health services are all failing this population when it comes to smoking.

The leading causes of preventable death are driven by commercial interests. Industry influence on policy is often unchecked. Our report with @oha-updates.bsky.social and AHA shows common arguments made to oppose regulations: www.ash.org.uk/resources/view/killer-tactics and we made a bingo card too

Most adult smokers do not accurately understand that vaping is less harmful than smoking (only a third). This risks smokers not switching, but also means that public concern about vaping is informed by inaccurate understanding about risks.

Of those who quit with a vape, just under a third have quit vaping too. Around two thirds continue vaping.

Current vaping is at 11%, or 5.6 million people – most of whom are smoking or have quit smoking.

Looking for something interesting to add as my first post. My colleague has just created this graph for me showing how cigarette sales map on to lung cancer in the UK - I assume no surprise to people to see the correlation but powerful to see none the less
