Once a fortnight, in spite of the Reserve Bank and its interest rate hikes, I buy some flowers. This fornight: disbuds and sunflowers.

The giant heads of three pale pink disbuds jockey with the leaves and emerging blooms of some sunflowers. All’s right with the world. (It isn’t, overall, but there are glimpses and moments.)

That also was a running joke between my dad and I. “The I, Claudius treatment.” The show came out here in 1978 when I was in Grade 4. I didn’t get the ‘Roman’ lettering and thought it was called I Clavdivs, which is what Dad and I also called it forevermore.

I can. All welfare should be universal. Any means testing is always demeaning and leads to huge levels of non-take-up and consequently poverty. Services that are just for the poor are always poor services. Healthcare, social housing, social care, pensions etc should be available for all.

They were clearly going to get squished before they made it anywhere so I grabbed my paddle and scooped them from behind and got Michael Flatley to push them onto my paddle with hers (all the while she’s shrieking, “They’re so gross!”) I think they have their appeal. You be the judge:

A cluster of long, brown-black grubs (actually larvae) covered in rows of bristles, slowly making their way across harsh bitumen terrain. Poor guys.

Anyway, a couple of nice things that happened today were that we saw a pair of Sacred Kingfishers that had obviously lobbed into town for breeding season AND we rescued a big blob of spitfire caterpillars that were making their way across the carpark looking for a bit of dirt to bury themselves in.

Afterwards, as I wriggled out of my wet gear and into tracky daks & a jumper, some random bloke screeches at me from his car about my wantonness for getting changed in the carpark instead of the toilets. (I was covered up the whole time. NO FLASHING.)
