Next summer when I'm back in New England, I think it would be cool to take the radio to Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. I jope it's a SOTA site. I haven't checked yet.

I was hoping to take the 510 out Sunday but Isaias had other ideas for the region. I don't want to play with lightning with a new radio. Man plans, G-d laughs. G-d thinks I'm a riot.

Or . . . You come to bed late to the other person wrapped like a burrito hogging all of the blankets.

I think I registered for D-Star when I first got it. Then I spent several months in the Maine mountains where the Kenwood was a brick aside from listening to music on the radio. I wasn't expecting a ham radio to have that option. The only active repeater in range was System Fusion.

Plus it will be good practice setting up off grid which I expect would be good practice for ARES and events.

I notice there aren't many UHF/VHF POTA activations. I assume HF would be easier. I may test POTA with the 510. I won't know until I try.

I'm looking at possibly the 710 on my wishlist since I didn't spring for the Shack in the Box this time. I fired up the 510 with an arrow JPole last night and was blown away. I need to stay mindful of how much space in my van this all needs for bi-annual migration.

The book for the D75 is almost 200 pages long because it can do so much. I have barely scratched the surface of what it can do. The whole hobby has been like opening an Avalanche Closet of new knowledge!

So I was thinking . . . Life is getting expensive. A lot of kids either have or want a cellphone. For starters the phones are expensive & then you have the forever cost of monthly plans. A US ham lic cost $35. QRZ Jumpstart radio $40 +shipping. Club membership $10-15 annually. Local repeater use $0

Tell me about roll up J-Poles? They sound like a good POTA, ARES, event volunteering option I may need to add to my gear list.

I picked the 510. I like the dual frequency touch screen on my 5D which looks similar. The 510 will be my first radio with more than 5W. I allowed myself to put it in the need column. The Yaesu Optima had to stay on my wishlist for maybe later.

I've had a lot of fun tracking ISS. With my Kenwood I have learned to record the activity as it goes overhead. Then I can listen to it later and try to hear the callsigns.

Then, I signed up to volunteer for the Dempsey Challenge. They put me at the command center and I learned a lot. I ordered an Arrow J-Pole antenna. But then, I participated in an ARES test. I was deaf without the J-Pole and they still couldn't hear me on 5W. Now I'm looking at 50W+ radios.

I'm learning some of this the hard and expensive way. My first radio was the Kenwood TH D75. Pay once cry once, or so I thought. Then I spent the summer in the woods where the only active repeater was System Fusion. So then I bought the Yaesu 5D. Again aiming for pay onve cry once. Then . . .

The Ham radio hobby is proving to be almost (so far) as easy to spend money as my quilting hobby. I bought my 4th radio in 6 months. It is my first above 5W. After the Dempsey Challenge and the ARES exercise it was clear that I need more power. The Yaesu 510DRASP looks fun. #hamradio #amateurradio

Getting ready for my first ARES Simulation Emergency Test. Going in clueless, hopefully coming out later today with new knowledge. My batteries are charged and I tested my set-up the other day. #hamradio

Consider laying them out in the yard on a sunny day. I use a hammock, but grass will do.

I have an inherited UFO that didn't come with all the parts or a pattern. Thanks to networking, a friend's husband recognized it and directed me to the book (from the 70's) it is in. The pattern pieces are ment to be traced from the book. I wish I had plastic templates! It would be easier.

I make it known I expect my quilts to be used and for none of them to still exist for an historian to try to determine who made them and when.

I've thought of that. The inner battle of focus on what needs done, unpacking, or chasing the squirrel and working on a UFO.

If you use heating oil, fill your tank now if you haven't already. If there is any way to get an extra tank installed, do it now.

Camp is closed for the season and there is a frost warning for tonight. Perfect timing. "Camp" is a garage: no heat, no AC, no plumbing . . .

Final touch added yesterday. I was waiting for the repositional spray crafting glue to arrive so I could add the stencil. In memory of my grandmother who built the garage.
"In Memory of Florence B. Kraft" spray painted in the corner of a garage door that has a quilt block style Cardinal painting on the door.

I had hoped this summer to get an outlet added to my garage "camp" specifically for an iron for quilting. Doing so may require upgrading the garage from 60amp service. Unfortunately, the electrician has been very busy this summer and hasn't gotten to my place yet. #quiltsky

Green garage with Blue trim and bird quilt blocks painted on light blue doors. The left garage door is a Blue Jay quilt block design. The right door has a Cardinal quilt block design.

I spent 2 months above the A line as a Tech this summer and no clue.

I scanned through the book for Technician. It seems like it should be in Chapter 7. The only hint is a note with an "*" sending the reader to 97. How many readers notice the side note and go read part 97 until they find what they don't realize they are looking for?

I wonder though how many wet behind the ears Technicians wouldn't know to look or ask. It's in the Technician privileges & I was a Tech until Sept 1st. I've been above the A Line all summer and didn't know better. It's been a very quiet summer. I'd have happily chatted anywhere on 2m or 70cm.

Studying for Extra is where I saw it. My Technician is recent. I passed in May and I don't remember reading about it. I'll have to go back and look. Something like that should probably be noted on the colorful ARRL band chart. 🤔
