Something bugs me about Italian opinion polls. There's not enough variance: FdI has been at 27-and-a-bit in 12 of the last 13 polls. My suspicion was herding, so I went down a statistical rabbit hole, which involved inventing a new measure of herding (which may have picked up a different issue!). 🧵

I’ve been here. I’ve had to care for people that would harm me and mine, and it has hurt *me* every time I had to do so. The way you cope with that is to hold to your principles. They have to matter, even if they don’t to the people that benefit from the mercy of them. Hegseth seeks to kill that.

He is alive today because they did their jobs. That was not sentiment. It was a hard, tangible expression of the values this country claims to stand for. Our principles had to mean something even when the person benefiting from them had violated everything we believed in.
