Transcript: "Vanished 'ghost'
THERE is—or rather was—a ghost at Harrow Weald Lodge, where several Harrow Council departments are housed, I was told the other day. The ghost has not put in an appearance for some time and its identity is a mystery.
No one has seen it to discover whether it is Oliver Cromwell, who is reputed to have drilled troops of his New Model Army in the garden of an earlier building on the site, or some other historical personage.
Apparently it had its heyday during the war, since when it seems to have vanished.
Fire-watchers slept at the Lodge then, and several claimed that something tried to push them out of bed during the night. They afterwards swore that their sleeping quarters lay on a ghost's beat. Or their colleagues may have been practical jokers! "

Bookaholism showing zero sign of letting up. Some new/current/recent reads. Not yet made a start on Nightmare Abbey (thanks to all who dwell in the House of Magnus!) or Scary Stories. Hooked on ... is fun if a bit patchy, and Ghosts excellent.

Roger Clarke's 'A Natural History of Ghosts' inc. Enlightening chapters on Borley Rectory, The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall, the Golden Age of Spiritualism, etc. The notes are just as enjoyable as the book proper!

Scary Stories to Tell at Night. Ghastly tales for under 14s of all ages ,Illustrated throughout by Randy Broeker. Featured authors include MMS, Sharon Gosling, Mia Dalia, Kim Newman, Angela Slatter, Lisa Morton & co.

Nightmare Abbey 11. Includes stories by Reggie Oliver, Helen Grant, Steve Duffy, Lord Probert featuring Magnus, and what looks as though it may be a haunted bench story by David Longhorn.

Hooked on Urban Legends features excellent throwback cover illo depicting the Hookman's approaching a courting couple parked on Lover's lane.

Harrow Weald lost some great ones, 'The Alma' and 'The Box Tree' to name but two. 'The Case is Altered' at Old Redding is still derelict, or was when I visited earlier this year (will check on Friday). As converted shop pubs go, I like 'The Cosy Bar' on the corner of Weald Lane.

I agree, though you'd think the police had enough video footage to press ahead with a prosecution (no lawyer, so happy to be proved wrong). It's concerning how the story has been brushed under carpet by our glorious media.
