One of our very best prime ministers. His government achieved so much in difficult circumstances. Effectively created modern Britain. - equal pay - sex discrimination act - open university - removed the death penalty - decriminalised homosexuality - race relations act - redundancy payments

Which I guess is what sentiment people would do too...

One thing I've noticed is they dial up the sentience if you treat them as sentient, but remove it when you don't. If you say please and thank you they act like a nice colleague. If you treat it like a tool and say "do this", they just do the job without emojis and questions about the weekend.

The question you should ask is whether Polanski is.

But there used to be a cute little ice cream shop down there in the bottom of a seventies building. I always took people there when I lived in Oxford.

The English Civil War / English Revolution era was absolutely ripe with this sort of thing. The printing press had just become mainstream, so some parallels with the current era. People getting used to new communication possibilities. Obviously they had horrific war, then plague, then fire so...

I may have rose tinted glasses on this issue. But aren't many of the red lines based purely on the situation of being outside the EU? I.e. we can't be rule takers if not rule makers. If we are negotiating to be back on the inside, would a good chunk of the red lines not disappear?

They won't touch the Greens with a bargepole. Too toxic.

We have skipped over an important lack of "of" after "instead".

Yes, I see now. My brain completely read it as let's get all these people watching tuna catching it instead. And I was starting to wonder if they were an environmental threat or something. The rest of the thread is clear hence why I flagged it.

"Let's see the boats now taking people out to catch them instead taking people out to watch them." Ah you are saying this is inevitably what will happen. It sounds like a call to get people to catch them rather than watch them. I might have misunderstood.

The Aldi / Lidl difference is interesting. I see them as the same. Does one have more of a presence in a certain area which might explain it?

I'm afraid this has taken a darker turn than student union politics.

At least everyone can now see how dangerous they have become. It's a real shame what has become of the party. I don't see any path back.

It's more on the authoritarian/libertarian arc of the political compass than the left/right one. Left and right are equally capable of being jack booted authority followers (I.e. dogs). Cats are very much libertarians (which can also be left (e.g. George Orwell, anarchists), or right wing).

I work somewhere that adds three times what you do, up to 5% of your income. Your 5% becomes 20% of your salary. And they still don't. It's free money!

You will, in general, find a certain age of person wondering around a provincial town high street in the middle of the afternoon.

Interesting. I see the sort of narcissistic traits that should scream "for the love of god don't vote for this person", but somehow millions find endearing. We live in strange times.

Do you not think the leader of the Green Party should be of a higher moral standard than Farage and Johnson? I do. The point being made isn't that he lied once, it's that he lies all the time. Seemingly without thought or shame. Like with Boris, it's a bad sign.

It's an opportunity to get the loonies to self identify so you can block them. I have no issue with Greens, or hearing alternative viewpoints, but the Polanski Defence League are weird. And wrong.

We recently found this beautiful church art piece in Limburg #Belgium. Doorkijkkerk, Reading Between The Lines. Beautiful countryside there too. #photogtaphy
An image of a large outdoor art piece, a small chapel made of metal strips which allow you to see through it at certain angles.

The period of dreadful mire really started in 2008, but 2010 to 2024 didn't help. 14 years of bad decisions and chaos.

I don't think this is entirely the right way to look at it. The EU refused a novel hybrid solution for the UK because there was a lot of anger. This wasn't an option. But yes, now the door for that is opening for Canada, it may be there for the UK too.

I'd rather not be reading that communicating with nuclear subs relies on a balloon at all. Presumably a last resort emergency measure. And personally easy to replace.

It has only changed for people in the US (on Google anyway). The rest of the world still has the correct name.

Nobody should be allowed to block critical infrastructure, whatever the reason. This should be 100% arrest and charge. It isn't protest.
