I really like Sonic Origins and think it’s a great way to play the classics overall, but one thing that brings it down is they didn’t include the Easter egg where Knuckles shoos you on your way in Sky Sanctuary in Sonic 3 & Knuckles. I made this video comparing the original to Origins.

Happy 30th Anniversary to the North American launch of Nintendo 64! I’ll never forget the first time I saw Super Mario 64. It blew me away. It was one of the most impressive technical leaps in gaming history. The N64 is still to this day one of my favorite game consoles ever.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear has so much going for it. It has really cool level themes and a great soundtrack! I just wish it didn’t have so much “screw the player” design. If this game wasn’t so full of cheap deaths, it might be among my favorites on the system.

The Sonic concert was awesome! Lots of the iconic songs were performed on stage, but also unexpected stuff like medleys from Sonic R, Sonic 3D Blast, Sonic Rush, and the Sonic Advance series. It was a cool experience!

Happy 25th Anniversary to the launch of the Nintendo GameCube! While it has some great Nintendo games such as F-Zero GX and WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Games!, Sonic especially had an AMAZING run on this console and I played so much Sonic on this system, both new and old games.

The Sega Saturn classic NiGHTS into Dreams has some truly wonderful environments, but I think my favorite level in the game is Soft Museum. Everything is all rubbery and it’s like flying through a giant bouncy house!

Eggman really had a miniature sized Sonic that he could easily squash right in front of him and thought “I’ll just use this machine here and there’s NO way Sonic can stop me this time unless he happens to twist the knob and bunch of times and make all the capsule prizes come out”.

Sonic Lost World is kind of an inconsistent mess of a game with all kinds of ideas thrown at the wall to see what sticks, but Honeycomb Highway (Desert Ruins Zone 2) is a LOT of fun and by far the highlight of the game. I wish more levels in Lost World were as good as this.

I never really see people talk about how in Sonic Origins they enlarged and enhanced the graphics for single-player runs in Sonic 3’s competition mode to fit the whole screen. That’s really cool that they did that.

There’s something about the early Super Mario Bros. 1 era artwork that I find really endearing. It’s goofy looking and unrefined, and gives a slightly different look to some of these characters before their designs became more developed and established in later games.

Did you ever get a video game purely from its box art? Sonic Spinball is that game for me. It was late 1993, I had just gotten a Sega Genesis, and I saw what was legitimately the coolest video game box I had ever seen, so this ended up being one of my first games for the system.

“Maybe you’re good enough, DOGMEAT! Let’s find out.” Sewer Shark on the Sega CD was the first time I had ever seen FMV’s in a video game, and I can’t even begin to express just how blown away I was by these little grainy-ass video clips playing on my TV screen.

Nine years ago today, Sonic Mania was released! I can’t believe this game is almost a decade old now. It was such a positive turning point for the series after some rough years, and it’s such an amazing game that gave me everything I wanted from a return to the classic style.

People keep talking about all the GameCube games that need to come to NSO, but I’m still waiting on that one big glaring omission from the Nintendo 64 NSO library. After all these years, Diddy Kong Racing still hasn’t made it on to the service. Will we ever see it? I want my DKR on the go!
