My bio friends get triggered when Thiel suggests lack of progress in bio is a skill issue, and make arguments about physicists in the field and how technical we are. But what if it’s about a lack of non-technical skills, of imagination and conviction and…marketing? open.substack.com/pub/oscillat...

One thing I’m pretty grateful for in the iGEM community is the access to inspiration. Getting to follow and learn from leaders worldwide who are advancing SynBio, empowering their communities, providing mentorship, ensuring that access is both open and inclusive. Thank you for your leadership 💚

The chromoproteins I used were developed by iGEM teams and available from Addgene. Only three of the strains are actually fluorescent. To learn more about the plasmids check out this blog in which I was interviewed about the streak plate challenge I do in my class. blog.addgene.org/streaking-fo...

I did some blogging about branding of academic disciplines and what comes after synthetic biology. Scientists harbor some shame at the thought of caring about brands, but the distinctions between subfields matter to them, just not to anyone else open.substack.com/pub/oscillat...

Since mirror-life was recently in the news, thought I should cover a condition where the positions of internal organs such as the heart and lungs are reversed in the human body. open.substack.com/pub/genesand...

You see a real generational divide in this thread about the impact of luck on scientific careers Young people: "In 2012 I somehow managed to win a fellowship that rejects 99.99999% of applicants" Old people: "In 1979 I crashed my surfboard into Sydney Brenner and ended up with full tenure"

Our new paper is out in PNAS! We engineered bacteria to display enzymes that sea sponges use to mineralize their glass skeletons. These bacteria can self-assemble a bioglass coating around themselves, and focus light into bright, photonic nanojets. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...

About 450mil years ago, during a geologic springtime on Earth, a genetic event took place, that would shape our immunity and perhaps evolution itself. This story begins when a microbe infected the aquatic life in an ancient supercontinent, Gondwana. genesandmachines.substack.com/p/how-did-ou...

How did our immune system develop memory?
A genes jump from a microbe to a fish and eventually to us to help us fight infections.
