Colonoscopy saves lives. But why do some colorectal cancers still appear despite screening? In our new Gut article, we discuss how “normal” mucosa may become biologically primed for faster cancer development. gut.bmj.com/content/earl...

We're in this week's Nature! We propose a model of how a cell learns by running an evolutionary algorithm: exploring different gene-regulatory combinations and using feedback responses to stabilize those combinations that reduce stress levels. Full text: nature.com/articles/s41...

It is time to view cancer as “wounds that do not heal”, and act accordingly! In this short piece with Tosca Dalessi, we explore how oncoembryonic programs could reshape precision therapy: — Less collateral damage — Prevent resistance — Better models for discovery 🔗 doi.org/10.1002/ctm2...

Kudos to Cammareri and co. of Myant lab for unveiling how ATRX & HNF4A gatekeep colonic identity—lose ATRX, and cells go rogue, fueling CRC metastasis. A crucial step toward understanding and targeting plasticity in #ColorectalCancer! #CancerResearch www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Loss of colonic fidelity enables multilineage plasticity and metastasis - Nature
The chromatin-remodelling enzyme ATRX and the transcription factor HNF4A are identified as pivotal regulators of colonic epithelial identity, with roles in metastasis in colorectal cancer.

Move beyond ‘publish or perish’ by measuring behaviours that benefit academia Perspective in #Nature 🧪 suggesting a new "G+ index" — G representing generosity, giving and other ‘good things’ in academia Wouldn't this be great 🤔 By Prof. Kelly-Ann Allen www.nature.com/articles/d41...
Excerpt from article by Prof Kelly-Ann Allen:

The index could reflect good science practices — for
instance, by recognizing replication studies. And public
reach could be measured in terms of open-science prac-
tices — data-sharing, pre-registering protocols and commu-
nicating through podcasts, blogs and media contributions.
In some fields, publishing in practice-based journals
could be rewarded to ensure that research reaches profes-
sional communities. Similarly, editorial and peer-review
work for these journals — and work for scientific societies,
regardless of prestige — could be valued.
Ultimately, the full list of metrics should be decided by
the academic community, reflecting a collective vision for
a healthier workplace. Funding bodies and institutions
could then incorporate the index into their evaluation
criteria, providing both the infrastructure and incentives
for adoption. Many of the metrics are already tracked in
existing data repositories, but improved systems to collect
and amalgamate the data are needed.
The index should remain dynamic and evolving, allowing
new ways to evaluate and measure other desirable work-
place attributes to emerge over time — work–life balance,
for instance, or a positive teaching culture.

By 2030, 1 in 3 colorectal cancers will occur before age 50! The speed at which early-onset colorectal cancer metastasizes remains unclear, but understanding its biology is urgent to prevent a looming cancer epidemic. www.cell.com/cell/fulltex...

Tumor “age” in early-onset colorectal cancer
The incidence of early-onset colorectal cancer (EO-CRC) is surging, and by 2030, one-third of all CRCs will occur before the commonly recommended screening age of 50 years. The time required for EO-CR...

Today is #WorldCancerDay, a day to reflect and push for progress. Cancer affects millions, but research and innovative treatments are changing lives. Every discovery, every breakthrough, and every act of support brings us closer to a future where cancer is no longer a life-threatening disease.

Eosinophils restrict CRC metastasis by inhibiting pro-tumorigenic SPP1+ macrophage differentiation
Eosinophils, traditionally associated with allergic responses, have emerged as critical immune modulators in colorectal cancer (CRC). Here, we reveal that eosinophils actively shape the tumor microenv...
