For a couple of years now Owen Boswarva, @owenboswarva.bsky.social, has been patiently asking local councils for their address data with permission re-use as open data, sharing the results. Now Ordnance Survey & GeoPlace have slapped him with a cease & desist: www.owenboswarva.com/blog/post-ad...

bases in his 1965 PhD thesis and named them after his supervisor, Wolfgang Gröbner"

I've been using Sociabli to cross-post from mastodon->bluesky (in the spirit of "can't really be arsed with bluesky, but I might change my mind"). But today they're shutting down 😞 You're about to recommend Bridgy Fed. *Everyone* recommends Bridgy Fed, but... as far as I can see it

I'm voting #green. I wish my vote could be a clear signal to Labour, that they need to act on wealth inequality and engage with the wealth tax idea. In reality, tomorrow morning Farage will be celebrating and Labour will carry on pondering ways to be more right wing/racist as they fuddle

My son can get into our preferred secondary school if he can do well (and outrank other kids!) on an "11 plus Verbal Reasoning" test. It's an intense business. I'm now considering whether to spend lots of money on a tutor (£70 per session). It seems like he needs it, but maybe it's going

Old tech advice needed: Our TV aerial signal started getting choppy a few months ago. At first I thought the co-axe connector at the back of the freeview box was a bit wobbly, and since we were due a replacement box anyway, I got a new freeview+ box. Annoyingly the TV signal is now even

Love the attention to detail on some of these OpenStreetMap rendering style updates. Spot the difference. www.openstreetmap.org/user/imagico/…
Screenshot from the blog post about OpenStreetMap map rendering tweaks. The sentence "We are now also rendering turning circles and mini-roundabouts on unpaved roads with an unpaved pattern" ...is followed by a side by side "old" and "new" map rendering comparison showing a *very* subtle difference in the shade of grey around mini roundabouts.

Well I don't know about lower-energy spin-triplet excitons, but I'm certainly excited that a molybdenum-based near-infrared light-emitting spin-flip emitter can serve as a triplet-selective energy acceptor from triplet states of tetracene-based dimers generated by singlet fission:

There's another "London Geo Meet-up" tonight. Can't attend myself unfortunately but last time it was fun. A small cosy gathering, so as well as the presentations there was plenty of chance to have a chat and get to know some interesting geo people. You can sign up for tonight here:

On mushrooms in Seville
Me in Seville, Spain, on the top walkways of "Setas" the "mushrooms" building. A curvy shaped thing made out of criss crossed wood. The walkways give a good view across the rooftops of Seville.
I look a bit crazy with windswept hair.

Did a staff survey about carbon reduction "Any other suggestions to improve our organisation's sustainability?" I decided to put "Boycott AI" as a cheeky little act of resistance. In truth, the carbon efficiency of staff commutes (which the survey focussed on) will overshadow any influence

We went up the new viewing chimney experience at Battersea Power Station today. The lift itself is quite impressive engineering.
View upwards from the top window of the left looking up through the Battersea power station chimney (which is now a lift shaft). It opens out in to daylight at the top, and has funky loops of neon lighting on the way up.

Can't help feeling the sentence here at the end of the section on "Boating on the lake" is bit... out of place? : www.dayoutwiththekids.co.uk/attract… Anyway, we went there, to Aldenham Country Park today. It's alright. Not much more exciting than

It's "World Number Day" #NumberDay This means last night was the annual panic evening of "Ah crap! We need to come up with fancy dress costume". Any parents on here know what I mean? The 10-year-old was reasonably happy scribbling the digits of π on an old T-Shirt.
White T-shirt with lots of digits being written out with black marker pen. In typical 10 year old style, the digits are *fairly* neat, but the lines are starting to go a bit wonky.
