That's what high quality sizing data looks like! Sadly had to sell my home with a hybrid heat pump, but the new house is a great opportunity fully electrify with high quality load data! Think I can do 1.5 tons with no backup! #heatpumps

I don’t have a great baseline of what our electric 240V dryer + washer used to pull, but I was pretty surprised to see our #heatpump combo washer/dryer only uses $0.25 cents per load in electricity. And eliminated a building envelope penetration further improving our heating load. #energysky
Graph of heatpump combo washer dryer energy use showing $3/mo in electricity costs. Roughly $0.25/load.

Using a heat pump dryer/washer combo is an awesome way to help simplify electrification projects! Though I am increasingly an advocate of avoiding heat kits if possible in Canada to minimize peak load.

It's a very interesting calculus for agrivoltaics, since land opex for PV is already so low and it will typically boost the cost of PV all things equal, but also potentially doubles the value of the land as an asset. It's gotta be designed ag first, and PV second for that reason I think.

Ah, the problem is not that we fail to provide everyone with adequate housing or services for people with addiction, the *real problem* is that the rest of us are forced to see the results of these things, under the label "social decay". Got it.

Of course the fossil fuel sector has slowed the transition, but climate advocacy has also failed by any measure. Digging into old strategies won't work. Time for a rethink. #energysky #climatesky

Vertical configuration helps keep the panels clean. Since 2022, the owners have not cleaned the panels, aided by frequent rainfall and soil that is not dry. Vertical production profiles produce at times when the hourly price of electricity is highest. #AgPV 🔌💡 www.pv-magazine.com/2025/07/11/a...

I don't think we'll ever get to the point where home electrification feels quick and easy. The best path to making cases like this easier are 120V appliances (in this case, a 120V heat pump dryer).

I went to my engineering professor's office hours in grad school to learn what reactive power meant. By the end, he said "I dunno Harris...it's just magic..." 🤣 From a policy perspective (which was the angle I was learning engineering from) we settled on it as an aspect of "power quality." 🔌💡

Uncontroversial? • High % renewables bring new grid stability risks. • Those risks seem manageable, but necessary policies/tech/regs are still in flux. • The 🇪🇸/🇵🇹 event was almost certainly multifactorial. Untangling will take time, but… • Early data does imply VRE instability as one contributor.

I don't think we can judge 5-minute charger development unnecessary. There is a demand case for time saved so it's unclear why deployment would be worse than 1) street chargers + [slower] fast chargers on routes + 3) home / retail charging. This is where markets are helpful to industrial policy.

I've taken the step of blocking this person, who consistently uses Bluesky to claim that we need to use *more* fossil fuels to tackle climate change. Here he is claiming that fossil gas is the key to achieving direct carbon dioxide removal.
