How societies preserve critical capabilities

My experience across global health tells me we're thinking too small. We're trying too hard to improve the systems we've inherited, and not hard enough to transform them.

At some point, the appearance of collective action became a substitute for collective action itself

A timely piece from Margaret MacMillan on the changing international order and cooperation within it. It raises a question I keep coming back to. What happens to problems that depend on collective action when national and collective interests diverge? www.nytimes.com/2026/09/01/o...

If academia wants to draw a hard line around AI-assisted writing, it also has to be intellectually consistent about the human-assisted writing practices it has tolerated for decades.

There was a time I saw part of my PhD research presented as a poster, with someone else's name as first author. Plagiarism and intellectual theft are far more common in academia than academia likes to admit.

We’ve entered a post-industrial era of innovation with institutions still designed for the industrial one.

Religion was once a claim about what deserves devotion. The rich learned to turn it into a claim about what deserves obedience. Innovation was once a claim about what deserves investment. The rich have learned to turn it into a claim about what deserves escape.

It’s a real shame where we’re headed. At precisely the moment antimicrobial resistance demands greater cooperation, we’re retreating behind sovereignty. www.ft.com/content/5924...

AMR deaths rose around 8% between 1990 and 2021, and are projected to rise another 70% by 2050. At what point do we stop asking how to do more of the same, and start asking whether we're solving the right problem?

It’s a shame that the 5th High-Level Ministerial on Antimicrobial Resistance has been postponed. I was hoping there would be clarity on who is actually responsible for preserving antibiotic effectiveness as a long-term strategic capability. Postponing the meeting postpones that question too.

I find the psychological side of AMR fascinating. It is so hard to provide a new perspective to people working within it. Thats probably why I enjoy the challenge. Compared to other disease areas I actually get paid to operate in its definitely the hardest from a human perspective
