Thank God this was thwarted, but man this brought back memories of when a white supremacist shot up the Oak Creek Sikh Temple in my home state of Wisconsin. Unfortunately the violence against Indians and Desis isnt new, but the online rhetoric is getting worse

Excellent piece by @rozinaali.bsky.social on the anti-Indian riots in Bellingham, and the history of anti-Indian and anti-Asian actions and sentiment. Sadly a lot of the diaspora don't know our history in this country, and how the hate we see today isn't new placesjournal.org/article/a-ri...

A Riot in Bellingham
When a violent mob drove Punjabi settlers from Bellingham, Washington, in 1907, the town became a flashpoint for exclusionary rhetoric and restrictive immigration.

Though some of these conservative Indian-American pundits are gonna watch this and learn nothing form it, and instead keep up their bigoted efforts because better to commonly hate someone else than understand and fight against all racisms

Honestly, watching conservative Indian Americans who had no issue with far-right pundits targeting Muslims, Latinos, African Americans, Haitians, Arabs, etc...now feel hurt and betrayed now those same people are coming after Indians would be funny if it wasn't infuriating

Most of the Best of the Best discourse: what is THE diaspora experience, insensitivity/exclusion of Afghans, asserting an Eelam identity,+ the idea of a "South Asian" culture all are interesting and worth engaging with...then you have people angry that its dark skinned actors 🙃

Its always gonna annoy the shit out of me that the discussion of Indian Americans, or even South Asian Americans, always feels frozen when folks cant do something as easy as look at how populations voted in the most recent elections and instead just go on vibes

Its utterly crazy to me that folks, including a Democrat data science person, takes 2 towns as proof that the Indian American vote in 2024 was for Trump, without bothering to look at the numerous nationwide surveys that showed an absolute majority of IAs voting for Democrats

But it is fascinating these different ideas like political blackness in the UK, Black Power (put forward by Walter Rodney + others in the Caribbean), and black consciousness in South Africa worked to unite across the color line against imperialism, capitalism, racism, etc.

Its inspiring reading about how African, Caribbean, and Desis came together under a single banner, and how people connected their struggles to Ireland, South Africa, Palestine, and even the Indians and Pak discussed Kashmir and Balochistan. Sad to see how it fractured

and how often some of the people or orgs tried to use anti-Indian racism to either attack other minority groups (with seemingly no awareness for hypocrisy and bigotry), or just act like any criticism of the Indian government was "anti-Indian racism". Honestly its all exhausting.

So it is infuriating that so often we were told that "well your parents never complain and immigrants tend to have more positive views"...as if that nullified the racism and not that we kids had to see and hear the racism our parents faced that others downplayed

Anti-Indian racism has been a serious issue for a while, and you can't disconnect it or separate it from other forms of racism in this country that connect them. Hell a lot of us have experienced this while we've been growing up

The post that set it off was a plainly racist post by a faceless account, though so many times I've seen Pak accounts who tried to say "its not racist, we're simply pointing out that Indians tend to be dark skinned vs Pak", and nah you're just dumb as hell

Gotta love this attempt by some Pakistani accounts on here to differentiate themselves from Indians by going "we're light skinned vs those dark skinned Indians", when like A) not true at all (met as many dark skin Paks as Indians), B) nice to forefront your racism and colorism

Its well known that Hindu nationalists have been trying to make alliances with the general pro-Israel/Zionism movement for decades now and there is some cooperation in DC...but for the longest time (and still is to a certain extent), it felt very one way in terms of support

Seeing how many western pro-Israel folks are now treating being anti-Hindutva as "anti-Hindu/Hinduphobia" overnight....can't wait for the Atlantic to find a western Sanghi to start writing pieces about like "the leftwing case against anti-Hindu nationalism"

My favorite part is some of the "critics" say "omg how dare they say multiple imperialisms".....which the letter doesnt actually say, since the condemnation of imperialism is purely on the US and Israel, and it points out that the prisons built were inspired by American system
