People who get in trouble for using LLMs to generate critical documents because they've read that ML has amazing uses in science are an extreme example of the consequences of AI hype. (I'm not excusing individual responsibility, but I think we gloss over the name collision impacts!)

It would be neat if scientific papers were reproducible enough to do sensitivity analyses this way... but I don't think this has hit mainstream, even after some high-profile attempts (e.g. F1000 Living Figures, eLife Executable Research Article)

I tracked down a copy of Byrne's Euclid and here are my 2 quibbles (so far). 1. ⊏ signifies `greather than` and ⊐ signifies `less than` is some bullshit 2. This section of Book 1 is titled "Elucidations", but "Euclidations" is right there.

One of most heartbreaking things about Hank Green turning to LLMs is that he gets to do science communication full-time to a massive audience and is well-resourced. He doesn't need to cut corners or outsource his thinking. Meanwhile, there are so many people doing amazing work with zero resources.

The actual harsh truth about MAHA is that it is an anti-vaxx, anti-science, pro-diarrhea conspiracy movement. It cloaks its arguments in abstractions about "big pharma" and "free speech" to generate *the exact op-ed The Atlantic keeps publishing*. Movements like this need to be fought, not placated.

My own thoughts after scanning through the paper and supplement. Overall performance is quite low: (scale of 0 to 1), control arm participants had a mean of 0.284 (sd = 0.287) in practice. In exam, control arm mean was 0.321 (sd = 0.277).

I don't totally agree with this position and also have some questions. I'm curious what characterizes "heavily politicized and oriented around activism" and what is allowed and what is not. For example, much of academic economics has long been deeply intertwined with promoting certain worldviews..

For folks asking why bother commenting because the OMB won't care: comments help build cases for the courts by explicitly laying out harms. That's why it's really important to have your comments be as specific as possible. Also, contact your senators and reps! They actually do care about this.

Six years since the start of COVID and this type of misinformation by omission is still rampant. The best protection against airborne pathogens is wearing a high quality mask.
What is the biggest infectious disease risk at World Cup matches?

Health experts say the more realistic worry is about respiratory diseases like the cold, flu, RSV, and COVID. These spread readily through the air—via coughs and sneezes—especially in crowded conditions. Many stadiums are outdoors, which helps cut down on transmission, but being in tight quarters next to someone who is sick could make you sick as well. How can I protect myself from getting sick?

It's advice you've heard since childhood, but doctors say the best defense against germs is washing your hands. Traditional soap and water work on a number of levels, from the physical removal and destruction of microbes on your hands to cleaning away any dirt and grime.

This is such a huge and overlooked problem. At C4R, we aim training at early career researchers, and we hear a lot of concern about wanting to do the correct work, but being directed by PIs to do what is expedient. I don't know how much progress is possible without addressing the power imbalance.

To me, "trust in science" is too large and too complex of a concept; and so is "scientists engaging in politics". It seems obvious to me that one can drum up evidence for effects in any desired direction depending on how one operationalizes the concepts.

Further thoughts: if the variable is one where changes should be interpreted proportionally (+/- 10%) then, of course the y-axis should include 0.

Hao Ye @hao-and-y.bsky.social · 03/04/2026
I think my latest pet peeve is folks convinced that the y-axis in plots ALWAYS needs to start at 0. It is necessary when the plot comparison is LENGTH. (e.g. the height of bars in a bar chart) It is NOT necessary when the plot comparison is POSITION. (e.g. points or a line chart)
