They are not perfect. They are living documents, and they will never be complete. But they are a start.
120
Hans Schnedlitz @hansschnedlitz.com · 09/07/2026
Most importantly, they make the work visible. The budgets, the venues, the speaker wrangling, the scheduling, the weird edge cases. All the stuff that makes an event happen before anyone shows up.
120
Hans Schnedlitz @hansschnedlitz.com · 09/07/2026
That’s what RubyEvents Guides is. The guides are based on more than a dozen interviews with experienced conference organizers. They collect practical hints, tools, resources, and long-form advice you can work through at your own pace.
120
Hans Schnedlitz @hansschnedlitz.com · 09/07/2026
There are posts, writeups, and bits of advice scattered around. But I kept wanting something more complete. Something grounded in lived experience, not generic “community building” advice. Something that takes the knowledge in organizers’ heads and makes it easier to find.
120
Hans Schnedlitz @hansschnedlitz.com · 09/07/2026
The awkward part is that event organizing is still pretty opaque. You can want to help and still get stuck quickly. Where do I find a venue? How do I get speakers? What format should I use? Who can I talk to who has done this before?

Hans Schnedlitz @hansschnedlitz.com · 09/07/2026
RubyEvents Guides is now live. Over the last few months, I talked to Rubyists who want to help the community keep going. Some want to restart a local meetup. Some are organizing their first small conference. Some already run events and want to make the next one better.

Copy-pasting code is underrated. Better than adding another dependency. Better than vendoring. Now I point an agent at a library and say "take their approach, adapt it for our project." The result fits like a glove. It's a great time to copy-paste. More on the ol' blog 👇️
