It’s a million degrees, and I’m grateful #thesealeychallenge promotes reading: an activity for living room couches, pauses on shaded hikes, and poolside daydrinking. If you want a signed copy of Slaughterhouse for your August reading, pop me a message & I’ll cover shipping 💕

A REVIEW OF SUSAN L. LEARY'S MORE FLOWERS

by HANNAH V WARREN

Susan Leary's More Flowers is a woven exploration of what can happen when a poet juxtaposes craft and theory. As the speaker avoids discursive identity, this poetry collection relies on scientific study, images of the grotesque, and monstrous tropes to analyze what it means to live in a feminine-coded body, slipping in and out of public visibility. When visible, the speaker becomes grotesque, either bursting with flowers or peeling away from her own skin. When invisible, the speaker loses the snippet of identity claimed during her moments of visual monstrosity. Underneath it all is a complicated mourning, a daughter suffering grief, but Leary shies away from a simple emotional turbulence and carries the reader into a much richer metaphor exploring how grief and femininity intersect and manifest on the body.

This morning I explained Waymos to my rural Airbnb host who’s only left Yorkshire three times in her life and I think she was on the edge of a heart attack. Relatable.

In rather large news, I’ve accepted an offer for the Kenyon Review Fellowship! Following in the footsteps of writers like Flannery O’Connor, W.S. Merwin, James Wright, Natalie Shapero, Keith S. Wilson, and Molly McCully Brown, I’ll live in Gambier, OH, where I’ll pursue my own writing projects while working closely with the Kenyon Review to publish some of the most radical and important voices in contemporary literature. This fellowship provides time—time to learn more about the natural world in a new landscape, time to finish and revise a poetry manuscript, time to query a novel, time to cultivate my creative pedagogy in a new environment. I’m unbelievably thrilled for the next two years.
