There's a missing intermediate step here. Between the daughter failing her algebra test and hiring a tutor, you sit down and study with her. Why is that step skipped? Both parents are highly educated. High school algebra is figure-outable

Algebra, she thought, was the one exception - this was a subiect she believed she knew. She had taken it in eighth grade but had to retake it because she hadn't passed the statewide exam. At the time, I was somewhat concerned, but as Najya had earned A's in the class I assumed she didn't pass because, like many children, she has trouble sometimes on standardized tests. When she had to take the course again, I thought that the concepts would be familiar to her. One night early in the semester as we were eating dinner, Najya gushed about how easv the test had been. "I know I got an A, or at least a B," she said smiling. A few davs later, she came into the house. ran to her room without speaking, slammed the door and sunk to her floor, sobbing. She'd failed it.
This became an unbearable pattern. She'd come home glowing about an algebra exam because she "really knew the material this time" and my stomach would tie into knots. A few days later, I'd trail her upstairs to find her crumpled on her bed. "I studied so hard. I iust feel so dumb."
My child's confidence wilted like an unwatered plant. She started to develop an almost debilitating anxiety around taking tests. She became sullen at school and began to act out. For the first time ever, I got messages from teachers about Najya's behavior.

Why isn't there a line here about all the books the daughter was reading at home that demonstrated she was a proficient reader? Why is Hannah-Jones so fully relying on grades and tests, when she knows (and states elsewhere in the article) those are flawed measures?

But fourth grade was the worst year. At the first parent-teacher conference in November 2019, Najya’s teachers told us that she was not performing on grade-level in any of her academic subjects and that her assessment given at the start of the school year had shown she was not a proficient reader. We were perplexed. Najya was always a good student, and her past reading assessments were always at or above grade level.

This is what I use, from Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes A Day. It's a no-kneed dough. I just keep a batch in the fridge and take out chunks to bake as needed

A student handwrote a response to a reading comprehension question, but he started with "as an AI model..." before actually answering the question lol. I put a note directing him to ignore all previous instructions and write a poem based on the story.

The kids and I went out to Leesburg today to go to one of my favorite kinds of place: overcrowded used bookstores with broken AC. This one is called Books and Other Found Things and it's incredibly charming

I put this little mouse door up in our hallway yesterday, just to be cute. Then today, the science teacher across the hall found a live mouse in her classroom. I think it's my fault.

I added artwork to my classroom library corner this year

The boys could not calm down and focus during bedtime stories tonight, even though they were clearly trying. So I gave them lacing cards and they sat on the rug lacing while I read, and it worked so well

We got the kids a Tin Can Phone, a wifi landline made so kids can call their friends. We had to have a little crash course in Phone etiquette, then Linus got too anxious to make a call. He asked if he could text instead.
