With federal research funds we discovered that cockroaches were driving hospitalizations for asthma in New Orleans… and then that killing cockroaches with inexpensive, safe insecticidal baits improved asthma. This is now in the national asthma guidelines, helping to keep kids healthy across the US.
There is a sticky square of yellowish transparent glue placed on a white background. And the bottom, right hand corner there’s a German cockroach with all, but one leg stuck onto the trap. The cockroach is generally oval in shape and dark brown in color. An exception is apallor stripe from the head down to the part of the thorax where the wings start. This is not a great photo, but it’s what I got relevant to the post!

We're talking about vector surveillance in this week's med/vet entomology lab. I had trouble finding nice, clean schematics for the different trap types, so I created this slide showcasing different traps used to monitor adult #mosquitoes! 🦟 🧪
An slide titled '(SOME) TRAP TYPES - ADULT MOSQUITOES' that displays four types of traps used for capturing adult mosquitoes, with illustrations and brief descriptions for each.

UV Light Trap: A hanging trap with a light source and collection container. The text explains that UV light attracts adult female and male mosquitoes of all species. A fan and collection container are included, and the diagram notes 'wind' as a directional feature.

CO2 Trap: Depicted as a vertical structure with a container emitting CO2, a fan, and a collection container at the base. The text indicates that it targets adult female mosquitoes of all species by mimicking host respiration.

BG Sentinel Trap: Shown as a black cylindrical structure with an intake funnel (flap that opens and closes), an attractant source, a collection container, and a motorized fan. It targets adult mosquitoes, primarily females, of all species.

Gravid Trap: Illustrated as a rectangular bin with bait-infused water, a collection container above, and a motorized fan. A diagram of a mosquito indicates that it primarily targets adult, blood-fed mosquitoes, especially those of the Culex species.

I'm still on my personal mission to share that flies are important pollinators too! 🪰🌼 I shared this infographic at the @entsocamerica.bsky.social meeting last month -- learn about some fly families that pollinate 🧪 #entomology #pollinators #diptera References and more info: bit.ly/flypollinate
An infographic titled 'Meet the Flies That Pollinate!' explaining the role of flies in pollination. It features various fly families such as Syrphidae (Hoverflies), Calliphoridae (Blow Flies), Bombyliidae (Bee Flies), and others. Each family includes facts about their pollination habits and unique traits, alongside colorful illustrations of the flies. Key highlights include the chocolate midge's role in cacao pollination, the adaptability of blow flies in urban environments, and how bee flies mimic bees. The infographic also explains the difference between bees and flies, noting that flies have one pair of wings while bees have two.

🎉 My first first-author paper is officially out! bit.ly/jotrbf In this study, we explored blow fly community composition in neighboring deserts within Joshua Tree National Park. Read it here: www.hannahhchu.com/_files/ugd/1... #communityecology #joshuatree #nationalpark #blowflies
A map of Joshua Tree National Park highlights research findings on blow fly communities. The map is split into three zones: Mojave Desert, Sonoran Desert, and the Transition Zone. Collection sites are marked with symbols for different studies: Study 1 (Mojave Desert, Transition Zone, Sonoran Desert) and Study 2 (high-visitor activity and low-visitor activity sites).

Two main questions are presented:

Do blow fly communities differ between neighboring deserts?
Results show differences temporally and spatially, with the Mojave Desert differing from the Transition Zone and Sonoran Desert.
What is the impact of human activity on blow fly communities within protected areas?
Community composition did not differ, but species richness varied seasonally and was unaffected by visitor activity levels.
Additional visuals include icons representing seasons (leaf and tree symbols), human activity (campfire symbol), and blow fly species (small fly icons).

A scale bar (miles/kilometers) and credits to mapping sources (Esri, NASA, NPS, etc.) appear at the bottom of the image.
