Tom Toro cartoon. Children sitting around a campfire in a desolate-looking landscape, a ruined cityscape vaguely visible in the background. A man in a torn business suit tells them "Yes, the planet got destroyed. But for a beautiful moment in time we created a lot of value for shareholders."

Ik mocht de kersverse brugklasser helpen met boeken kaften en kon het natuurlijk niet laten ze even open te slaan. Spijt van.
Een pagina uit een geschiedenisboek. Tekst: "Source 6 Men and women. Once, a long time ago, men and women lived together in harmony. The man hunted and defended his wife and children against wild animals. He developed his skills as a sharpshooter. He learned to ficus on one thing And to determine how far or nearby things were. As a result, modern men are unable to listen closely. But they are good at reading maps. During the hunt, the women stayed together. They worked together in caring for the children and collecting food. They kept getting better and better at looking after others and doing more things at the same time. It went on like this for hundreds of thousands of years. Based on: Allan and Barbara Pease, Why men don't listen & women can't read maps, London 1999"

I received yet another request from the Metascience Novelty Indicators Challenge people, which is still doing the rounds apparently, and decided to send them an email this time. Here it is in case my response is useful to anyone else. #AcademicSky
I am writing to express my concern about the Novelty Indicators Challenge survey and let you know why I won’t be participating. (A second time, that is – I just received my second invitation to participate in this study, after having already completed the survey about two weeks ago and regretting it afterwards. I have not checked if this is an administrative oversight on your part or if the paper you want me to assess this time is a different one.)

As an Open Science advocate, I strongly believe that an overreliance on metrics is dangerous to science. While some aspects of scientific progress might be quantifiable, the academic community here in the Netherlands has increasingly recognised that metrics are inadequate proxies for scientific quality and moreover, that the more they are embedded in assessment procedures, the more actively harmful they become. Any effort spent by researchers on gaming or maximising a particular metric is effort not spent on writing the best possible article on its own terms, whatever they may be. Amazing contributions (and amazing researchers) end up overlooked because they do not fit whatever indicators the funding bodies are in love with at that moment. This is a particular problem when the indicator is novelty because novelty is without doubt one of the worst proxies for quality I can think of while also being incredibly easy to game. Some of the most persistent crises and biases in modern science (such as the replication crisis and the positive result bias) are rooted in a misguided emphasis on the shiny and the new. Moreover, a persistent problem with metrics is that they apply equal assessment criteria to vastly different fields of research, obscuring how different research traditions have very different ideas about what makes a paper good. Having actually filled out your survey, I noticed that there was very little relation between the aspects of the target paper the survey asked me to rate, and the way research is actually read and assessed in my field. Because of this, I am very concerned that any metric that is developed on the basis of this study will end up favouring certain fields or types of research over others.

Another huge problem with metrics is that they take research assessment away from the academic community itself (where it rightfully belongs) and transfer it to big tech companies like Elsevier whose calculations are proprietary and who are making eye-watering amounts of money selling researchers’ own data back to universities. In this particular case, it looks like Elsevier is involved with and/or sponsoring this challenge. It is hard to find clear information on your website but I don’t think it’s far-fetched to assume that Elsevier will end up developing another proprietary product on the basis of the results, which the academic community (including myself, and you) will have once again provided the data and free labour for.

In short, in a time where both the inherent harm done by overreliance on metrics, as well as the harm to academic freedom and independence caused by overreliance on proprietary products are increasingly recognised, it seems incredibly regressive not just to try to turn novelty into a metric, but to do so sponsored by / with the involvement of Elsevier.

Having written this expression of concern, I also would like to ask you to remove my initial survey responses from your study.

I looked up the study this likely referred to and surprise, the actual data do not support this conclusion. Also the respondents were all born between 1925-1950, basically the most outlier-y cohort in European history. But even then it looks like women were happiest in same-age relationships.

It is maddening to see my timeline full of internationals completely misinterpreting the Dutch election results. The 4(!) parties whose programmes were found to adhere to the rule of law (no red proposals in the graph below) together have 27 seats our of 150. The ones w/ more red than green: 71
A bar graph showing for each Dutch political party how much of their party programme was found to adhere to the rule of law by an independent legal body. Only 4 programmes (Denk, GLPvdA, PvdD and Volt) fully comply. 6 parties (BBB, FvD, JA21, PVV and VVD) contain more non-compliant than compliant proposals.

Lately i've been helping out with the incunabula digitisation project at our Special Collections dept. It turns out that few things are as zen as leafing through a 15th-century book for four hours straight. And stumbling upon people's scribbled notes and doodles is like time travel. ❤️
