It has also been a massively rewarding one. Some of that is because of the process itself, which brings its own catharsis, but it is also in no small part because of YOU. The comments on this show so often engage with its big picture themes in a way that makes me feel EXTREMELY lucky.

She was a part of the show's inspiration, and had always been a champion of my writing. I wonder if she'd have liked it. There's no way, now, to know. Remnants is a show about grief. A lot of my work concerns it but Remnants is the one most ABOUT it. As such, it's been a brutal writing experience.

Making Remnants has been a journey and a half. Close to 2000 hours of work, to create around 30 hours of audio. An emotional experience from the beginning, it was only made more so by the passing of my Great Grandmother the day after the Season One finale.

I've been this way since forever. When I started telling stories as a child, they all ended the same way: 'and then they all died', I'd recite, in my trite little four-year-old voice. Dispositionally I have always been this, and I kind of love it, and it's not something that's likely to change.

There are SO MANY other creators who make work that's much lighter in tone and topic than mine! So many! I promise you they're out there. I know what I am. I'm a big, doomy, Gothic-Romantic. My soul wears a velvet dressing gown. I like writing about blood and death and forced hands.

It is GREAT as a reader/listener to want to vary the stories you're engaging with, but you cannot will a creator to become something they're not. Framing part of a work's essence (in this case, its Gothic drama) as a failure because it connects that works to others I have made is daft.

I don't think that my work is all doom and gloom, though. The endings usually hit people the way they do because of the hope baked in there, from what I can tell. That's certainly my intention and from what I've seen, I've been successful in communicating that.

I saw a comment earlier and I'm feeling a Kind of Way about it. My work is Gothic, in the sense of big having emotional overtures, gloomy imagery, and emotionally fraught subjects. It often gets very dark, and I'm not shy about that! They're all listed as horror and thriller and dark fantasy.

First draft = horrible, violent synthesis that leaves both of us bloody. Second draft = you meet your kitten for the first time and hold its warm little body in your hands and start forging a bond that will last for decades.

my process is shaped to get me out of the first draft as fast as I can. I also kind of end up feeling a bit possessed when I'm working on a first draft, I need it done, it's near compulsive and anything preventing me from doing it feels like sandpaper on my eyelids.

In the midst of all the everything else I do, I've written one novel every six months for the last three years, which is a truly baffling stat that I kind feel slightly perturbed by. I've gotten compliments and feedback on them from agents, but none of them have been picked up, which sucks.
