Cross-posting from Tumblr because I think I did a pretty good job at describing the 'phenomena' of queer representation in audio drama here, and why it's something we can and should be actively trying to perpetuate!

Great! We love to see more people talking about this. Queer stories exist across all mediums, but I think the reason they're so much more visible in the audio drama space basically comes down to capitalism.

It gets a bit tricky here because there's been no systemic review of queer representation within the audio drama space so there aren't any statistics available that we can point to that I know of, and we have to just go on vibes. It's also important to remember that because audio drama is now mostly an online thing, it's really easy for the audiences to get siloed into groups. When that happens, it basically makes wholly separate communities listening to different shows from one another, so you get some portions of the audience whose experience of AD isn't very queer at all.

As it exists right now, as a portion of podcasting, audio drama is still a very young medium. Because of that, large corporations have yet to work out how to best extract huge amounts of money from it. That means you see independent work listed next to work made by the BBC without much discrimination between the two. It also means corporate interests are doing less to flatten queer and other marginalised voices in the space. When corporations come in, their priority is usually to make money, and that means whatever they're funding has to minimise risk. From this mindset, queerness is a risk that has to be mitigated, not a thing to be celebrated, except in very Acceptable ways.

Despite that, as the space has gotten larger, the same biases that homogenise the most visible works in other mediums have already started coming into play in the audio drama space too. Whilst the space still very queer (depending on where you find community around it!), most of the biggest audio dramas in the world are being made predominantly by people who pass as white, cis, straight men. It is important, I think, to emphasise that these people only *pass* as these things, because it is key to understand that what matters here is perception, not actual identity or lived experience. There's lots of reasons I think this has happened; the beginning of that invasion of corporate interest I talked about before; the fact people belonging to those demographics are more likely to have access to money; the fact that many people have a subconscious bias towards listening to people who sound that way; the fact that people who sound that way are so homogenous in other forms of media that they're considered to be the 'norm' from which others deviate.

Speaking of my lived experience as a gay trans guy from a working class background making audio dramas since 2020, I've found a fair amount of success in this space, particularly compared to my experiences with traditional publishing (but that's for another time, I think). However, it is worth noting that I struggle to raise funds and build awareness around my shows compared to creators who are less audibly working class, less queer, and less trans than I am. I worry that I have found a ceiling on how far my audiences can grow and how far my shows can reach, and I assume my identity and the explicitly queer nature of my work are contributing factors there. I make far less than minimum wage and am very worried about my ability to continue.

I know that's a bit of a bummer! I think it's important, though, to emphasise the context in which this queer art is being made, or if we're not careful, it'll start disappearing as folks are edged out of the space due to financial constraints, feelings of hopelessness, or they become invisible because more well-funded shows with access to marketing budgets and bigger name performers are standing in front of them, the way they do in other mediums. If we want audio drama to *keep* being a platform for queer stories the way it has been up to now, everyone needs to understand that it won't happen by accident, and that they can all play a part, whether by supporting creators on Patreon or through crowdfunding, by leaving ratings and reviews on their shows, by sharing them across social media, and by creating fan works. We are at a moment in time where it is still possible for us to shape what the future of this space will become, and I think we should do our damnedest to do so.

As I made this comparison for Remnants, Twelvelms' first season is around 80,000 words long, including its trailers and some cut sections! That's about the length of a novel. This means I have written well over 200,000 words of audio drama since this time last year. No wonder I'm so tired 😅
