I don't disagree with Jonah's assessment, but I also have my own take on games, so here it is. Every game is either about not touching bad things, learning about something that's happened in the past, or determining someone's fate, or somewhere in between.

A triangle showing three extremities of game types. Don't Touch the Bad Things is at the top, and that's every Mario game. Bottom left is Find Out What Happened, and that's Her Story. Bottom right is Decide Someone's Fate, which is Reigns. In the very middle, with equal parts all three, is Bastion. Other games somewhere in between the points are Ape Out, the Exit 8, Portal, Cave Story, Paradise Killer, Lorelei & the Laser Eyes, Crow Country, The Flame in the Flood, The The Stanley Parable, To the Moon, 1000xRESIST, and Papers Please.
