I loved it when philosophers like Ducasse, Peirce, James, Broad, and McTaggart were into parapsychology there's a great essay by C. J. Ducasse where he argues (against Hume) for the direct perceptibility of causation and then uses the example of telekinesis as empirical confirmation of his theory

Canonic counterpoint as a philosophical practice: mind, meaning, and metaphysics in Renaissance and Baroque musical composition
In an essay entitled “Schopenhauer’s Flute and Descartes’s Lute” (2024), Helen De Cruz asks: “what can musical practice tell us about philosophy?” The present paper offers an answer to this questio...

... in "C. P. E. Bach and the Living Traditions of Learned Counterpoint", David Yearsley suggests that a "complete" augmentation canon over such a long and unpredictable theme as the Royal Theme would be impossible. hence, I set myself the challenge of proving him wrong and this is the outcome (5/6)

... as Denis Collins notes, the latter sort of "complete" augmentation canon was a form that Bach never explored. Bach's augmentation canons are all of the "incomplete" sort. for "complete" augmentation canons, we need to turn to English Renaissance composers, e.g., John Bull, William Byrd (4/6) ...

... by contrast, in my canon, the "dux" is repeated across both halves of the "comes". both the "dux" and the "comes" state the entire soggetto, with the "dux" stating it twice and the "comes" stating it once. hence, the soggetto has to combine with both halves of its augmented form ... (3/6)
score of my canon in augmentation and contrary motion. The dux states the entire soggetto twice over the Royal Theme. The augmented comes states the entire soggetto in inversion over the Royal Theme. In the first half of the canon, the entire soggetto in the dux has to combine with the first half of its augmented form in the comes. In the second half of the canon, the entire soggetto in the dux has to combine with the second half of its augmented form in the comes.

... in Bach's canon, the augmented "comes" delivers half as many notes as the "dux". the "dux" comprises a single statement of the soggetto", but the "comes" only comprises the first half of the soggetto. hence, the soggetto only has to combine with the first half of its augmented form ... (2/6)
score of Bach's canon in augmentation and contrary motion from the Musical Offering. The top voice is annotated "the comes is inverted and half the speed of the dux, and so only has time to state the first half the soggetto". The middle voice is annotated "embellished version of the Royal Theme". The bottom voice is annotated "the dux states the soggetto in full".

I composed a little perpetual canon in augmentation and contrary motion on Frederick the Great's "Musical Offering" theme. Bach also wrote a canon in augmentation and contrary motion on that theme, but there's a crucial difference between his canon and mine ... (1/5) musescore.com/user/6707006...

yeah that's fair. unless it's trying to say something from an estranged rather than an engaged perspective, like "this physiological system is associated with two sets of experiences of the stars rather than just the usual one", but that really wouldn't be in keeping with the sentiment of the poem
010
Hane @hane.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
it isn't how you'd usually describe it, no, but I wouldn't expect a poem to stick to our usual descriptions of things. I think it's understandable as a figurative way of conveying how a scene is experientially duplicated because it is presenting to two experiencers.
120
Hane @hane.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
but then I wouldn't call it a "two-headed calf" but "two calves conjoined below the neck", which would utterly ruin the poem
020
Hane @hane.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
depending on the extent of the bicephaly (e.g., independent brainstems?), it could be supposed that there are two experiential subjects here with their own first-person viewpoints. if each head sees the number of stars that are present, then combined they would see twice the number of stars.

I've always thought of snakes as the Yogi of the animal kingdom. they spend most of their time sitting still, and during that time they probably aren't worrying about the future or the mean thing someone said to them last week, etc. also, they fast regularly and have no material possessions

my wife's grandma (who turned 100 this year) now can't be bothered to remember the names of family members, so she makes small talk with very general questions, e.g., "how are the girls?" could mean my mother-in-law and her sister, my wife and her sister, or our twin girls. she isn't bothered which!

I won’t lie, it’s a bit overwhelming to see the work hyperbolized by many press outlets, including the university. We did not discover a new organ, or that you have two consciousnesses, etc! I’m excited for the general positive recognition, (especially the coverage from the Chronicle by Jack Lee)

The brain is a single organ. But it may not start that way, study suggests
A Stanford-led study challenges the idea that the brain develops from one common pool of early cells — and could help researchers model diseases such as ALS.

Ok, this "there are two separate brains" thing appears to be making the rounds, and I want to be absolutely clear: this is a press office overhyping some perfectly reasonable science that won't come as a surprise to most developmental biologists.

I'm now reminded of Tim Thornton's maxims for eating pizza from Essential Philosophy of Psychiatry (2007, p. 68)
Two kinds of consideration support this claim. One is simply appearance. To an unprejudiced eye, it should be apparent that judgements about conflicting values are made in the absence of a general theory. This point is best made by looking to a non-medical and comparatively trivial example because it is easier to consdier matters where the stakes are low. Consider, for example, how one might make choices in a pizzeria. One may have in mind same general maxims such as:
- a spicy pizza is best accompanied by a fruity red wine like Zinfandel;
- there is no point in eating a mozzarella garlic bread and also pizza at the same meal;
- any pizza with egg on it should be treated with suspicion;
- all unbaked cheesecakes are an abomination;
- one should never spend more than £50 for two at a pizzeria.
