There is an interesting connection between long-termism and anti-abortion beliefs. They both believe that someone who does not exist now can be harmed by not being brought into existence.

ORPHANED CATS NEED FOREVER HOME IN NORTHEAST (PLEASE READ *ENTIRE* THREAD) My wife's childhood friend died Thursday, leaving his two *mildly* special-needs cats. The elder, Wally, is about 13. ABSOLUTELY affectionate cat; GLORIOUSLY dim. His only issue is that he poops in bathtubs if given a chance

When my brain broke, I set about trying to fix it the same way I do with anything — by pulling it apart to figure out what's jammed. This started as a cultural history of writer's block, and ended up in the neuroscience of how creativity itself works (or doesn't): thestory.au/articles/wri...

When tragedy destroyed his ability to write, Patrick Pittman went looking for a way back to the page. But is the cure for writer’s block in your heart, or in your head?

My pot from @roseschmits.bsky.social arrived! I was worried about shipping because of all the tentacles, but it came wrapped in so much bubble wrap that it was a 20-minute operation to get it out. Here's a picture (wizard provided for scale).
A small pink and green pot with dozens of tentacles sprouting out of the bottom. One tentacle is holding a plastic wizard.

I just don’t see how we can pretend even for a moment that anything involving our federal government is remotely normal when the president is covering up his involvement in a child sex trafficking ring. Like, what are we doing here

When people are talking about genocide it feels like people think of the Holocaust as the archetypical example of genocide, so if a situation doesn't measure up to the Holocaust, it's not really genocide. It's weird; like if we were talking about theme parks, and people were saying 1/2...

I went to a protest today. The organizers said 10 times as many people showed as they expected.
People gathered on a corner holding signs waiting to cross the street. My sign: Impeach Trump it's the only way to stop the chaos

I went to this Tesla protest a month ago, and there were only about a dozen people. There's easily a couple hundred people today.

I just had a weird thought. You inherit 23 chromosomes from your father and 23 from your mother, and it's always exactly 50-50. But which 23 you inherit is random. Your mother could give you exactly the 23 she got from her mother. Then you'd be genetically unrelated to your maternal grandfather

Random napkin math: LLMs training sets contain about 15 trillion tokens. At 1$ per word (what Google says is a low-end rate for a magazine article) this means the value of the training set is about 6 trillion dollars (a word is usually 2-3 tokens)

Trumps insistence that he was wounded by a bullet is really reminding me of his reaction to his inauguration crowd size. It shouldn't be a big deal - despite the best efforts of the Republican party, most Americans have not been wounded by a bullet. He's just decided that it's important.
