Did you know baruch spinoza made fan art of himself as revolutionary fisherman masaniello, peoples hero of the neopolitan revolution of 1647 that created a republic for like eight months?

Takeaways from Here Where We Live Is Our Country by Molly Crabapple: thread. I finished reading this today and it had me riveted— read the last 200 pages in one go. Historical writing is often drier, more careful about its statements; crabapple leans into affect and its value throughout

can someone normal write a good biography of this guy ideally a comic book
Although Eberhardt largely devoted herself to the Muslim way of life, she frequently partook of marijuana and alcohol[27] and had many lovers.[28][29][30] According to a friend, Eberhardt "drank more than a Legionnaire, smoked more kief than a hashish addict and made love for the love of making love".[31] She was heterosexual, but often treated sexual intercourse as impersonal.[32] The reason for her Arabic companions' tolerance of her lifestyle has been debated by biographers. According to Mackworth, the "delicate courtesy of the Arabs" led them to treat Eberhardt as a man because she wished to live as one.[28] Eberhardt's behaviour made her an outcast with the French settlers and the colonial administration, who watched her closely.[33] Seeing no reason why a woman would choose the company of impoverished Arabs over her fellow Europeans, they eventually concluded she must be an English agent, sent to stir up resentment towards the French.[34]

my basic thesis is thornton is writing about people relating to each other and dreaming through the magic superstructure of the game, whereas wroten is preoccupied with relating to the Self through the game’s medium…with a christian preoccupation with dyads and purity
Unlike Eden II, where the video game can spasmodically stretch, ignoring material constraints, to cover all of reality, the video game in A/S/L lies underneath, a superstructure, a narrative, an arcana guiding these women’s lives, just as real– the moments where it peeks through as possibility are goosebump-raising. They cannot perceive this structure except in doubtful glimpses– it is both inside and outside them, showing us, the reader, that there is something connecting perception beyond the shadows anyone individually sees on their own wall. The shadows are shared– a reality exists that affects us whether or not we understand it. Jeanne Thornton is the best at writing teenagers and I think she is one of the greatest at writing sorcery, magic, invocation and dreams. Wroten seems to shine most when writing about dyads, mangled-frustrated romantic desire, the darkness of small children, and the indignant hope for total future purity which can still exist at the bottom of a pit.

One of the taking off places for writing this is that libraryjournal barely describes what eden ii is about in their review, while comicsbeat mainly just says “it’s clever” without deeply engaging in its themes
This review, in its non-comics-head engagement with what amounts to the first few pages, rushes the summary of the central plot, which is that Ellis (who uses they/them), in reaction to ennui and internal pain and maybe a bit of a rotten crush on a hot femme housemate, engineers a promising virtual reality where anything is possible– only to have it stolen by a stubbly professor who sells it to a wicked corporation, who use it to attempt to control everyone. The housemates, together with the professor’s genius five-year-old daughter and, eventually, the regretful, alcoholic professor himself, then attempt to wrest control of the game and the world back from the corporation. They remove corporate control of the game and then vanish into it; the world outside the game then dies. I am not sure if Wroten would agree with me, but it seems thematically linked to The Chronicles of Narnia’s final book, The Last Battle, where virtue is tested against satanic evil before yeeting everyone good into a healed world where their bodies no longer matter

I am frankly still confused abt the number of deaths that the iranian govt / militias perpetrated in january against protesters and wikipedia talk page is also confused. discussion on talk page highlights how contentious info can be and how connected seemingly disparate conflicts are rhetorically
Image of a wikipedia talk page about the deaths in iran protests. One user alleges that the internet is flooded with propagandists claiming 30k deaths shen that us more than four years of civilian deaths in russo-ukrainian war. Another user says that many people died in mariupol alone. Another says that in mariupol the UN could only confirm a thousand deaths
Wikipedia talk page. A user is mentioning that the 30k number cited in CBS is based on one anonymous contact, and that Iran International uses contacts reporting figures that differ from official statements from the iranian gov by a factor of ten

So much about my psyche can be explained by library lil and i am not above trying to examine it critically. Postfeminist, smug story about the power of feminized pink labor workers to civilize and educate unruly childlike bikers (and marry them). I had the same hair as lil as a kid
A page from Library Lil, featuring a strangely tattoo-free biker leaning over the bar to threaten the bartender, who is explaining that nobody in town watches tv because of a librarianLibrary lil, a slight woman, throws a motorcycle to the shock of the childlike bikers and the amusement of a cat

Delany thought a lot about the cognitive/relational consequences of certain kinds of personality with easy access to rote information and the different ways knowledge and learning works with different social power systems
Marc thinks of herself as a well-adjusted human male, relatively good at her job1 and job2–though, as we saw above, she might not know very much about it. Her vast troves of knowledge about different planets amount to trivia, and she assumes she understands things far more deeply than she actually does; when she’s around real people, she tends to be judgy and awkward, even when those people, like the Thants, share some cultural context, or, like Santine, helped raise her. We could say that some cognitive pathways have been foreclosed, perhaps, by the reflexive and automatic way she unfolds information, repeats it by rote. Simultaneously, she is attracted to difference and the unknown. When she meets Rat, she falls instantly in love.

American adults have the ability to research and ask questions about the role our country has in the world and we are partly responsible, whether we like it or not, for the atrocities of our government, because our income taxes purchase bombs that destroy hospitals, schools, desalination plants

Alien kids
Mom stands in door, says: okay, show me, then i have to go.
Alien girl: just watch! See see— i am a spaceship.
Both her and her sister are shapeshifting so their bodies more resemble rockets and fire than the bodies of little girls
Her sister: i am the fire!
First girl: she’s fire on me!
They fall to floor: thud!

A nerdy guy working for Effluvia Magazine says: “wendel here works in the mail room, ms clarion! He wants us to publish a story about gay liberation on mars!” Ms clarion, an imposing hawk nosed woman editor, says “ABOUT WHAT?” Wendel, a gay wannabe writer, says “haha’ what he means is i’ve submitted s little science fiction piece here that incorporates a basic human rights statement few could argue with!”
