1/4 The recent disaster in Nepal reminds me of the commonly cited risk equation: 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 = 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 × 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 What has always troubled me about this formulation is its reliance on expected value as a measure of risk. Consider two very different scenarios:

Yes, Iceland are an independent sovereign state. Who also happen to be in the Single Market, the EEA and the Schengen zone, with freedom of movement for people, goods and services. But if the UK did that I'd be screaming about Brexit betrayal and being an EU puppet.

Back in 1987, during my PhD in Canada, I took my first AI course. That was about LISP, rule bases, and enough “if–then” statements to make your head spin. I even built a knowledge‑based system for reservoir operation. It felt futuristic at the time… www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

I only stumbled across this article the other day. It makes a valid point: globally, there is plenty of water for everyone. The real challenge, of course, is that it is distributed very unevenly. Some places have too much, others too little, and at the wrong times of the year.
