Late day 14: I have successfully not blown anything up. A flight back home, a snack, a load of laundry, and 12 hours of sleep (I think) and I'm here! Had a little bowl of pasta salad.

Day 13: I got stopped and told I had to pull a work permit to inspect the cabinets... After being told repeatedly that view-only jobs don't need one. They admitted that the fibre in the cabinets is so old that some had their sheathing crumble. Roast beef and gnocchi tonight! On the home stretch!

Day 12: Local guys broke the servers doing shit remotely. They're god damn cowboys and it's a piss off. Got asked to look in the industrial control cabinets tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to it. Shift engineer insisted I eat the chicken fingers tonight. The best food here, he says. He's right!

Day 11: The days are feeling longer. I should be productive, but after 11 12-hour days, I'm getting apathetic. Opened some external vendor support tickets. Scheduled a server reboot tomorrow. I had leftovers today.

Day 10: Was about to go out into all the machinery to check some fibre cable. Was required to use the radio to coordinate with others. Nobody showed me the protocols on using the radio. They said never mind. Did server checks all day. Lemon rice and Spanish meatballs in the canteen tonight.

Day 9: Another emergency shutdown. Not my fault. Monitored network equipment and made a report for 12 hours. A pleasant change. Steak in the canteen tonight! An early bed should make a pleasant day tomorrow. 2/3 done this stint.

Day 8: My boss called to check on me. Also forgot to do a quarterly review so he did it then. I knew he wouldn't fire me. Nobody wants to be at this facility for half a month, he wouldn't dare. Played a round of online golf after shift with my pal. Chipotle port cutlet sandwiches for dinner!

Day 7: Got my laptop on the internet in my room at camp! Still don't have all my access, and it looks like they'll have me here to do what I can regardless. I was too hopeful. Still sniffly, so I snuck some souvlaki and some fruit loops to my room. Just to be safe Almost half way through!

Day 6: Slept a lot. Feel magnitudes better, but still crappy. Still don't have all my keycards, and accounts to do my work, and the guy training me is gone in two days. If I don't get them by tomorrow, I may be leaving sooner than expected. Still not too hungry, so no idea what's tonight's meal.

Day 4: Last night's sore throat became a sickly 10 hour shift. The thought of opening a bag of Doritos and walking into the forest with it so I may be devoured by animals crosses my mind. A ham sandwich and NyQuil tonight. Now for bed. Tomorrow must be better I don't know how it could get worse.

Day 3: Actually got credential sets to most of the infrastructure. Got assigned work. A great day. ...then I ripped my pants. Debated jumping into the main furnace for the boilers. 3 days in and I'm already looking forward to home. Lemon porkchops and meatloaf in the canteen tonight!

Day 2: Forgot to take my hat off in the canteen during breakfast. Cook tried to silently warn me. Too sleepy to notice. Head cook reamed me out. Facility had an outage. People looked at me. I'm still doing orientation, a lucky break. Don't know what the dinner menu is. Not worth my life to check.

Day 1: Had to get training before being allowed to drive a camp truck. Cellular data is terrible. The room has hard wired internet which brings me joy. Canteen had lasagne tonight.

Well, Internet People... It's time. I'm going to be put on a plane, and sent up to a work camp for the rest of the month. Can't help but feel I've squandered these past few days. Could've done a going away stream, maybe some jackbox. Instead I packed, did some paperwork, and panicked for 4 days.

Is my way better? Hell no. Good? Not even close. But, I'm here. Now I have an outlet for creativity, an excuse to use my rusty skills, and a place where I can safely Do It Wrong. The scheduled streams make for nice mini life breaks too! I don't think I'm hanging it up anytime soon.

How about overlays? Well, the original idea was an abandoned building's basement, so the pitch black should be fine. Props? A mix of photo-bashing, colour balance abuse, and some Raster to Vector and back to Raster shenanigans. BGM? Bartered with a friend. Et Voila! A VTuber, a theme, and assets.

Streaming has always interested me, but the line of work I was in made that unrealistic. My new job more so. Sure, there's faceless streaming, but unless you've got a golden voice and a bit of acting experience I think it'd be tough to relay how you feel or what you think without being obnoxious.

Turns out, they, and many other artists I was following, were now VTubers! At that point, I took a good look, said "Good on them" to myself then went on my merry way. That would stay in my head for a while. Not in a "looping endlessly in my mind" way. More "put in a box in the brain closet" way.

So this was the early stage of VTubing manifesting around me when I wasn't looking. Most artists I watched were drawing a multi-layer detailed self portraits one day and another day debuting. One day, I'm winding down to do some hobbies, pull up Twitch and went "Huh... When did I follow them?"

When VTube Studio was released, most digital artists, especially those who do Youtube videos or Twitch streaming, already had most hardware requirements and technical acumen to pull it off. So they did! They had minimal barrier to entry. They showed the whole process, from canvas to showtime.

I follow(ed) lots of artists on Twitch and Youtube and whatnot. Poked at art with a stick a few times too. Most of my family has a creative streak of some sort... When VTubing grew past experiential, and/or needing special hardware and software chains, artists and tinkerers were first to try it.
