Illinois’ Safe At Home law takes effect today — requiring firearms to be secured so they’re not accessible to kids, at-risk individuals, or people prohibited from owning guns. We helped pass this because secure storage saves lives. Read more on Fox 2: fox2now.com/news/illinoi...

Thirteen years ago, twenty children and six educators were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary. Gun violence is still the leading cause of death for kids in America. We owe them more than thoughts and prayers. We owe them action.

First Trump slashed funding for violence prevention. Now his ICE raids are stopping Safe Passage workers from protecting kids on their way to school. This isn’t public safety. It’s political fear-mongering — and it’s putting lives at risk. Read more: www.thetrace.org/2025/12/chic...

Year after year, domestic violence involving firearms continues to rise. Women and children remain at risk from abusers who should never have access to a gun. That’s why we fought to pass Karina’s Law—signed earlier this year to help close dangerous gaps in Illinois law.

Whether they’re civilians or federal agents, the fact that public spaces now plan for people showing up with military-grade weapons should be a national warning sign. This isn’t freedom. It’s fear. And it’s undermining what it means to be safe in public. 📖: www.wbez.org/museums/2025...

82% of Illinois’ licensed gun “manufacturers” didn’t make a single gun. So why do they have licenses? To buy in bulk, dodge oversight, and move guns across state lines. It’s a loophole. And it’s putting lives at risk. Thanks to @vpcinfo.bsky.social for exposing it.

We applaud Governor Pritzker, AG Raoul, and Mayor Johnson for taking legal action to block what they’ve called an “illegal, dangerous, and unconstitutional federalization” of the Illinois National Guard. Their leadership shows what public safety really looks like: prevention, not force.

The President is federalizing the IL National Guard against the will of our own governor. This is federal overreach at its most dangerous: undermining trust, destabilizing communities, and threatening the progress we've made. Real safety is built from the ground up — by communities, not commands.

We have achieved historic reductions in violence through prevention, investment, and strong gun laws. That real progress is now endangered—not by crime itself, but by a political strategy that substitutes fear and force for proven solutions. We reject it in the strongest terms.

The President went further, describing an “invasion from within … no different than a foreign enemy.” That is language of war, aimed at Americans. It signals an approach that risks turning federal power against the very people it should protect.

While the circus around a potential federal deployment dominates headlines, too often the people most impacted—victims and families—are forgotten. Gun violence is not a political show. It’s about lives cut short, loved ones grieving, and communities carrying the weight every day.

As a trauma surgeon, I see bodies broken by bullets. More guns don't make us safer. They make anger more lethal – for Democrats and Republicans alike.
