Yeah, Ed Markey cheated.

I'm guessing the Meta settlement money is gonna be used as bribes for representatives in states that don't have age verification to vote in favor of laws to pass it.

If you hate Flock & it's mission to destroy privacy & create a surveillance state, you should also hate Meta & it's decisions to now implement age verification. It's EXACTLY the same thing. Governments are now going to use this settlement to push laws for Digital ID. You need to fight against this.

The Meta settlement is a horrible thing, as now it's going to lead to IG/FB having age verification to use, and withholding notifications and connections. Meta is now actively trying to get other companies to follow suit. So people hate Flock but love this? Why doesn't anything make sense anymore?

@evangreer.bsky.social Apparently MA Meta lawsuit is going to force age verification on IG and Facebook. It's also going to mess with notifications among other things. www.wbur.org/news/2026/08...

Even to the extent that some platforms are pre-complying or rolling out age verification and ID checks in response to political pressure "well I just won't use it" is not a helpful response. Many, many people do not have that choice. They depend on certain platforms for community, work, etc.

Gently, this is the most unhelpful reaction to these types of laws. It pretends that we actually a choice and that we can just "find a different website." But when online ID checks are government mandated, we literally can't. We have to fight collectively. We can't just individually "opt out"

Ironically, France's government did a study several years ago that found there was no safe or technically feasible way to mandate online age verification without massively expanding surveillance and eviscerating online privacy. They decided to do it anyway.

France just became the first nation in Europe to ban teens from social media and, you guessed it, they’re forcing everyone to upload their ID’s for social media access in order to enforce it. www.bbc.com/news/article...

France approves social media ban for under-15s
The law will require social media platforms in France to verify all users age from January.

Because it doesn't just end at social media, these laws always have very vague descriptions of what social media is. Eventually they'll want to ID you just to look up any old info or for purchasing anything online, etc

Hello everyone. HR 7757 the internet surveillance and censorship act was read twice in front of Congress yesterday and refered to a comittee. Please call your senators and Ted Cruz and Maria Cantwell to urge them to vote against the act. Do it again if you haven't already. 5calls.org/issue/kids-o...

There are arguments that the kind of resistance that defeated glassholes is no longer possible, or that “normal” looking glasses change the equation, but branding surveillance glasses as the domain of losers, weirdos, and perverts can still be effective.

We only have a limited time on this platform, Bsky will comply with a TEXAS law to enable surveillance here. The House just passed KOSA & the Kids Act. It's important to CONTACT YOUR SENATORS & tell them to OPPOSE them. Time is of the essence, & inaction could lead to the death of the internet!

Mayor Wu is sueing tech for using social media to target children. Is this being done as a loophole to push age verification if MA Congress falls through with bills? Is it being done to pressure the MA Senate to do the House bill? MA leaders go scummy when they don't get their way is way too common.

That plan *doesn’t* go after tech companies. It’s covertly pro-tech: age verification makes users responsible for regulation w/out asking tech to change anything. This would make the internet more restrictive for everyone while giving tech companies lots more personal data.

I genuinely don't understand how she even thinks this can be implemented. So corrupt to sneak it into another unrelated bill. She needs to be audited and impeached.

Guy Typing @guytyping.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
It doesn't even make sense though. The fact that she introduced this bill implies now she doesn't want to sign the bill that bans, and rather this one that just limits features? But even then, it's still gonna have to be a achieved by using the same means, ID and face scanning.

Guy Typing @guytyping.bsky.social · 15/04/2026
She's introduced another bill she wants passed in inclusion to the last one, insisting it's "not a ban", and trying to make it so only usable for 2 hours a day. She is so corrupt it's not even funny. She said "it's about control" but it's definitely in the malicious sense.

Seems our best bet is to have someone file a federal suit with the support of the EFF, ACLU, and NetChoice. Specifically someone or yourself would need to file an intake request with the ACLU making the case that the law affects you personally and has a large constitutional impact.
