UNICEF is deeply concerned by a recent spike in abduction of children by non-state armed groups (NSAGs) in Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique. This includes the reported abduction by NSAGs of seven boys in Mocimboa da Praia, Cabo Delgado province, which reportedly occurred on 23rd January.

UNICEF calls for the immediate release and handover to civil authorities of the abducted children, and for an immediate cessation of the abduction, recruitment and use of children, all of which constitute grave violations of children’s rights.

Abducted children are often forced to serve in combat and non-combat roles, putting their safety and wellbeing at grave risk. In response to the increase in abductions, UNICEF and partners are reinforcing child protection activities in impacted areas, seeking to prevent recruitment and use. Additional support is urgently needed for these critical yet underfunded efforts.
