I’d forgotten what a dire and disappointing experience a British post office can be. Empty shelves, tired carpet and bits of cheap plastic tat for sale, few staff - this in south London. It’s worse if you live in the countryside where Post Offices are like red squirrels - vanishingly rare

Health was an Army officer in WW2, not untypical of MPs of his era. The House of Commons today does have some ex military politicians and is all the better for it.

I do love the obituary Page in The Times, I get to marvel at the lives that people have had and it profiles not just the great and the good but also the bad and the truly awful. Today featured Dennis Locorriere, lead singer of Dr Hook and the Medicine Man - I commend it for this great line, see pic

Listening to a fellow bus passenger talking to his girlfriend and getting to listen to both ends of the conversation because he has her on loudspeaker. What is the matter with people?

Yes there’s cringe alright. I hadn’t thought of it as a working class attack, rather my question was why you’d want to hear any kind of person talk on something they know nothing about…

Opinions are like ***holes, everyone has one and they’re the cheapest form of content for the media. But when I hear a vox pop it often becomes a shout-at-the-radio moment. Editors should ask themselves, who cares what a random member of the public thinks about a topic they know nothing about?

The whiff of scandal. Does the media, which platforms him so lovingly, have the cojones to really go after this story?

Is it though? As Trump said in 2016, he could stand on 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and it wouldn’t affect his poll numbers. Where is the opposition, thr protests? Rather muted, it seems. Do we just wait for elections to find enough Americans sufficiently embarrassed to vote accordingly?

Very good point, Andrew, which just proves the old adage that a week is a long time in politics. A month is plenty of time for a total u-turn!

One can but hope, David. I don’t understand why Starmer hasn’t pinned Farage with blame for our poor economic outlook. Seems like an open goal to me.

Guy Dresser @guydp.bsky.social · 20/05/2026
Ignore the fact that in many parts of the country, people saw no benefits. Rightly or wrongly they voted for a change, hoping for a better future. Helped by the untruths of Johnson, Farage et al. Starmer’s biggest mistake by far is not to have pinned blame for the UK’s dire economic growth on Leave

Burnham’s comment that “the last thing we should do right now is revisit those arguments” reflects the views of his constituents - and frankly friends of mine who also live in Leave-voting areas. Those of us fortunate to have benefitted from globalisation and who could see gains from EU membership

When my employer last paid for me to fly business, a mere glance at the heaving BA lounge at Terminal 5 was enough for me to realize access to it is not the benefit you think it is. And with tiny legroom (29”) on short-haul, the same as EasyJet, I view BA as a budget airline in all but name.

UK politics feels like Britain’s Got Talent. Give people a short time to show what they can do then everyone tires of them and it’s ’get the next act on’. The UK has serious issues and a change of PM isn’t going to fix them.

Having kayaked at exactly that part of the Thames since 1984 as a member of Royal Canoe Club I can confirm I would never willingly swim in the river there. Each time I’ve fallen in there I’ve ended up being very sick. Sadly the river is too polluted to make swimming safe here

Trump‘s advance guard arriving this afternoon at #ZurichAirport ahead of his pilgrimage to the #WEF. I wonder what sort of welcome he’s going to get in #Davos this time. Last time he came, he was subject to the veneration and adulation that he craves. This time, I’m not so sure.

My mother died in June 2024. I told DWP, HMRC, etc. HMRC said they’d let me know if tax was owed. In fact she’d overpaid. The refund came in the first post after Christmas. Exactly 18 months.

Great headline, from 2013. But if the Great British public is wrong, maybe it’s just been misinformed or lied to. What is the mainstream media doing to combat misinformation, dare I ask…

Very tired of ‘Black Friday promotions everywhere in Europe, especially as it’s a US invention for the day post Thanksgiving, which I don’t celebrate. Still, all is well. I’m in an airport departure lounge and listening to ‘Rudolf the red-nosed reindeer’ and it’s not even December.

Good question, Tom. Better to criticize the program if it turns out to be dull rather than this unwarranted hatchet job. I’m sure there was scepticism about the prospects for a baking show on a mainstream channel, and look how that turned out.
