Preprint updated with a new set of modeling analyses. Naser finds that an RL-style 'policy gradient' model explains these novel effects quite well, where the motor system tunes its error sensitivity according to a movement-specific value gradient --> www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

New preprint! 🥳 How do we discover what to do when a movement goes wrong? Answer: hypothesis testing (HT) - testing and evaluating candidate motor solutions based on sensory evidence. HT explains how we explore, and when exploration gives way to an “aha!” moment.

New preprint! In this study, the fantastic Apoorva Sharma demonstrates that the amount of time that passes during motor preparation can "tag" for retrieval otherwise competing motor memories. Modeling work links these fx to putative temporal basis sets in the cerebellar cortex. Feedback welcome!

In a new paper, we found that older adults show attenuated explicit motor learning but enhanced implicit adaptation. Through a series of meta-analyses and experiments, we dive into the mechanisms underlying these age-related effects. Huge shoutout to Elizabeth Cisneros for leading the effort!

Thrilled to have this preprint out, from the amazing Zekun Sun! "Motor abstraction training generalizes to the refinement of specific movement patterns" In brief, across 8 experiments we found evidence of a causal role for abstract representations in motor learning www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Super thrilled to finally share the results of our team effort, from the lab of the one and only @ayab.bsky.social. Hopefully it will stir interesting discussions about how the brain balances continuity and segmentation

Excited to share a new paper spearheaded by the wonderful @baror-shira.bsky.social: tinyurl.com/bd8xdcum @erc.europa.eu @nathumbehav.nature.com We test the link between serial dependence (as an index of continuity) and event boundaries (indexing segmentation). A few key findings in the thread:

The cerebellum isn’t just about coordinating movement. It’s implicated in nearly every domain of cognition—from language to social behavior. But how exactly does the cerebellum contribute to action and cognition? 🧵 Check out our new paper w/ Rich Ivry. arxiv.org/abs/2509.09818

Cerebellar Contributions to Action and Cognition: Prediction, Timescale, and Continuity
The cerebellum is implicated in nearly every domain of human cognition, yet our understanding of how this subcortical structure contributes to cognition remains elusive. Efforts on this front have ten...

📢 New preprint! How do humans learn from arbitrary, abstract goals? We show that, when goal spaces can be compressed, costly working-memory processes give way to internalized reward functions, enabling efficient goal-dependent reinforcement learning. @annecollins.bsky.social arxiv.org/abs/2509.06810

Reward function compression facilitates goal-dependent reinforcement learning
Reinforcement learning agents learn from rewards, but humans can uniquely assign value to novel, abstract outcomes in a goal-dependent manner. However, this flexibility is cognitively costly, making l...

Fresh results now in bioRxiv! 🎉 We know about the function of NREM sleep for overnight memory consolidation. But what about REM sleep? We found that in aging, slow delta waves can intrude phasic REM periods, and this, is associated with worse overnight consolidation 🧠 (1/5) doi.org/10.1101/2025...

REM Sleep Misfires: Intruding Delta Waves Forecast Tau, Amyloid, and Forgetting in Aging

What happens to motor adaptation—the way we correct errors with feedback—when feedback is indirect, like a number on a screen? In our new paper in @royalsociety.org‬, we found that indirect feedback hinders learning compared to sensory feedback. tinyurl.com/5d32c99e

In Exp 5 we show that prolonged experience with baseline feedback produces attenuated adaptation. This is strikingly similar to latent inhibition, and consistent with our other evidence suggesting that motor adaptation is a form of associative learning. elifesciences.org/articles/75801
