Gang Mine and Rose End Meadows are total gems. Reserves like these are source of local animals and plants that allows us to believe Middleton Moor can be naturally restored.

This is a small revolution. Pigs were the main animals allowed to forage in medieval woodlands, so this a real step towards non-mechanical methodology

I believe in pigs. They are the best hope against bracken, they will turn over the soil, exposd the buried seed bed. Not sure how they'll do against brambles and raspberry, but we're going to find out.

Noticed this tiny snail shell suspended by two gossamer threads from the suet cage. I’ve come upon leaves “levitating” by invisible silk-threads before, but never before a little shell.

Not a single international cargo ship at the Port of Seattle. The port is dead. The last ship from China will dock at a West coast port on the 29th, and the last Chinese ship will dock on the East coast around May 10th. After that, there will be no more shipments arriving from China. We’re screwed.

Important. You can plant a load of seed to regenerate facsimile species rich grassland but you don't get back the full ecosystem with all its invertebrates for a very long time - 75yrs here. But this assumes all the needed invertebrates have somewhere nearby to come back from!

Is this news? It has always be the big mammals, the butterflies and the orchids that get the attention. The exception seems to be the UK SSSI designation, which perhaps because it is habitat-oriented does capture e,.g. wax-cap fungi. Of course that doesn't mean money.

There is an idea that all life is equivalent, so understanding mammals and bacteria is sufficient for any biologist. There is also an idea that all species are equivalent, so being able to distinguish them is trivial.
