Welp, it's been a good ride, but after 5 years of full remote and about 6 months of hybrid, I'm gonna be headed back to full time in office work next month.

Thats the full picture of why so many democrats voted against this bill, but these Fascists are too busy hoping MAGA is too stupid to realize the bill is impotent to solve the biggest example of the problem it's supposed to solve and that it quietly is a way to disenfranchise millions of Americans.

But we also cannot forget the framing. See, this wasn't Just a defictive anti corruption bill, attached to it, was totally unrelated Voter ID provisions that are deeply unpopular with all the people who care about free and open elections.

So while a bill designed to stop government officials from getting rich from their roles Sounds good on paper, this one doesn't do a fucking thing to address the government official getting the richest off of his role.

The president who makes dozens of trades per day, who's tweets, speeches, and duties actively change the market, and who has used all that to increase his net worth by BILLIONS in the year and a half since he took office.

And while that framing is misleading, I want to talk about why I don't like the bill as framed. It's a bar on Congress not actively trading stocks. You know who it doesn't bar from trading?

Variations of this post keep turning up in my feed from several republican congressmen. The idea is simple, why the hell are democrats against such a simple ass anti corruption bill?

Because when you define something very vaguely, and as inherently magical, the explanation become extremely elusive.

This chart makes my eyes twitch the longer I look at it. There are so many questions of "how is X more accepted than Y" at nearly every strata of it.

The more I read about this, the stronger the idea resonated with me. The more I reflected on my experiences throughout my life, the more sense many things made. All of which is to say. Happy #Pride from your resident #agender.

Then a couple of months ago I learned about Agender. It's nonbinary adjacent, but instead of a gender that doesn't conform to societies binaries, it is better understood as an identity lacking a strong sense of gender at all (vast simplification here, trying to keep this concise).

gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
It lead me to thinking that Gender was meaningless and we would be a lot better off as a society if we ditched the concept. But that was really hard to square with what I've learned about the transgender, gender fluid, nonbinary experiences.

gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 02/06/2026
For several years since deconstructing my former belief that Gender and Sex were intrinsically linked, I've thought the concept of gender was pretty pointless. None of what I cared about when it comes to my identity seemed in any connected anyone else's notion of Manhood.

It's the best I have. It's great in many many places. But much like counting Rs, there just seem to be weird cases in every model I've tried where things just break down in the stupidest ways. This one will refactor code and write unit tests as well as a junior engineer would...

But this is a 3 step task, and 2 of the steps are explicit in the prompt. 1) navigate to the correct directory 2) read git diff 3) summarize. It never gets past step one. If I had an intern/student who couldn't do that with explicit instructions, I'd recommend a new career.

I can't get nemotron 3 super to manage summarizing the changes in a git submodule that isn't the root of the open project in vs code. Even when I explicitly tell it the submodule path to work from. I can't use claude because I'm in defense land (and because Lockheed doesn't want to pay for it)

Even with a good model, a good system prompt, and a senior developer driving it, I see dumbshit from it every day that indicates any "understanding" is always coming from the human input, and the human reading the output. Kind of a pareidolia but for text situation.

Yeah, I'm not sure I buy into your definition of external intelligence applying to LLMs either. I use them every day as a developer, and while I get why many find this a derrigatory description, I stand by Fancy Autocomplete.

Ya'll would think I lost my fucking mind. And there seems no principled reason to think this wouldn't apply to the rest of the aesthetic values (visual, audio, tactile, olfactory). Absent some principled reason to think moral value is different, I see no reason to think it isn't.
010
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
And to put a finer point on it. Let's replace Value with Tastieness (a form of gastronomic value), and X with Pineapple on Pizza (PoP) . I think PoP is tasty. I think it would be tasty even if no one else agreed with me. But if I said, "Even if no one thought PoP was tasty, it still would be".
110
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
But that second bit seems suspicious to me in a way that a slight modification wouldn't be. If you said instead "I would still find X valuable even if no one else did", that would be a 'seeming' I wouldn't fight over. But then it's also open if those seemings are realist or not.
110
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
I'm very suspicious of claims of "objective value" seemings, and that's beyond my general suspicion of seeming in general. What I hear about these seemings is something like "it seems like X is valuable", conjoined with "it seems like X would be valuable even if nobody thought it was".

I didn't. The whole idea of the current tech being "intelligent" caused me to miss your by line and ignore it. I'll give it a read.
010
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 23/05/2026
I'm not sure what "intelligence" is even supposed to mean if it applies to large language models. It's just a big ass state machine, it's only different from tech we used to control computer opponents in video games for the last 20 years in scale, not in kind.

A conservative evangelical coworker of mine who I discuss religion and politics with recently told me that Romans is his "top of the mountain" theology. So I decided to re-read it in it's entirety. Yall, conservative evangelicals are so fucking full of shit it's literally painful to think about.

And without a disambiguation between what it means to Have consciousness versus what it means to Be consciousness, it looks like you're equivocating and haven't done anything to solve the problem of consciousness. Or at least haven't done anything that a physicalist couldn't mirror as well.
000
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
The issue I keep seeing is that you overwhelmingly talk about consciousness as something that Stuff Has. But when you get to the stuff of elementary physics you don't say that quarks Have consciousness, but that they Are consciousness.

If you say yes, then god can't be a Moral Agent, and thus calling him "good" is incoherent. If you say no, then you've seriously reduced the likelihood of our universe (that allows embodied moral agents) because god's moral goals don't require it.

Riffing off an idea from Phil Halper in his recent discussion with Stephen Meyer, I'd like to propose a slightly different dillema to pose against proponents of Fine Tuning arguments. Are bodies required for being a Moral Agent?

I'd love someone to press him on why he keeps bringing up cosmologists that point to a beginning of the universe when those cosmologists are using B theory of time that isn't actually compatible with his definition of beginning.
010
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
So "physical reality is real but is just made up of forms of consciousness" would be the better framing?
000

I'll go check it out. I've been trying to make sense of panpsychism since Goff started promoting Why and failing miserably, so it this has good stuff in it then it'll be well worth the read.
010
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
We could say Physicalism is the view that the physical is fundamental and ubiquitous, while Illusionism says that the physical is all there is If this is mostly right, does it also cleanly map onto a dichotomy between emergantism and reductionism, or would that be an independent consideration?
100
gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
So it's about the reality of the physical, with idealism denying it and panpsychism affirming it (but rejecting the dualist claim that the physical is fundamental). So a couple follow ups then. Is there a clear terminological inverse on the physicalist side? For example...

gusschultz.bsky.social @gusschultz.bsky.social · 27/04/2026
The distinction between panpsychism and idealism has never been very clear to me. Listening to multiple panpsychists, I cant even tell if it's supposed to a distinct position in a meaningful way.

If there is no expirement (even in principal) that could confirm or deny an answer to these questions, why should I care about the answer? Depends what you mean by reducible. Correctness entails a standard of judgement so the question is underspecified. Depends on the meaning of all 3 key terms.
