Nearly 3,000 acres of land in the Wayne National Forest were auctioned off for oil and gas development this week. Critics say it will damage the region’s natural resources, but industry officials feel...

At no point does the car in front of me actually stop either. The vast majority of drivers roll through stop signs, but it’s just been so normalized that people don’t notice or care. When cyclists do the same thing, it stands out to people.

Ernest Hemingway on the left, his bicycling philosophy on the right. #BicycleBirthday July 21 (1899-1961)

Photo of a man in a hat balancing on a bicycle by holding onto a fence with one hand.

Text: “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.”

Here's an interesting irony about Trump's claim of election rigging in 2020. When he won in 2016, Obama was in office. No rigging. And when he won in 2024, Biden was in office. No rigging. But when he lost in 2020, he was in office. So, did he rig the election against himself? Duh!

I would kill or die for Larry

A small operation in Oregon that hunts truffles with a trained dog has added an unpaid trainee. A cat named Larry accompanies the handler and the truffle dog into the woods every outing, works a patch of ground a little apart from them, and digs with tremendous confidence in places where there is nothing.
The handler says Larry has never found a truffle and shows no sign of understanding the assignment. He does not use scent the way the dog does and he does not respond when the dog makes a find.
He simply digs his own holes nearby and then inspects them. "He thinks he's on the team," the handler said. "He is emphatically not on the team."

The truth is somewhere in the middle on this. Most North American cities existed before mass car ownership. Many were quite substantial. But North America (also Australia and NZ) did have much more post-WW2 development than Europe. Greater Toronto had like 1/6 of its current population in 1950.
