I disagree with most of the article's individual points but I think regarding playdate specifically it's correct. LLMs can brute-force a lot of the limitations that make these coding toys interesting, and I think it's good for their communities to want to keep them out.

My "favorite" brand of these callout threads are the ones where it's an open source maintainer arguing with a dozen people who do not pay them or contribute to their project.

Very curious about what the next 3D Mario will be like. Feel like half of Nintendo's major titles since Mario Odyssey have had a similar sandbox/collectathon thing going on, I wonder if after a decade the next 3D Mario will push the pendulum back towards more restrictive design.

The more gimmicky bosses (Frozen Horror; Lumenarks; Mined Mind) are great- it's fun puzzling out what the optimal way to beat them is. Otherwise, too many bosses are just about learning attack patterns, there's not as much boss variety as platforming challenge variety.

I'm not a huge fan of the combat. Feels like enemies are generally too fast/tanky to let me take on more than one at a time, but plenty of rooms have 3+ enemies in them. In late game I could just out-damage enemies while face-tanking their attacks, which is a different brand of not fun.

Played Mina the Hollower. Very good! Great level design- there's tons of unique platforming mechanics and exploration is very rewarding. Artwork is excellent, lots of variety and detail in the environments without compromising legibility, character animations are fun too.

I don't really see it. Jai's marketed on not having any "hand-holding" memory management features (it doesn't even have smart pointers), but D has a garbage collector- I think that's a major dividing line on what niche systems language users look for.

Petal Crash is very good. Been playing it with a drawing tablet, which feels more intuitive than its controller/keyboard-based input methods. Poking at the mobile version (from Itchio) today, which it feels very appropriate for- it's a shame app stores are so hostile towards finished games!

I agree, but this is mostly because Mario Maker doesn't include many ways to do kaizo-style tricks with "medium" difficulty. Shell jump levels are unplayable for the vast majority of players, but only because there isn't an item that lets you do similar movement with more lenient timing.

Despite looking like Python, Nim does not have a huge array of machine learning libraries and educational resources.

Tangentially, it's interesting comparing animation with other TV->Youtube "migrations". Shows like Mythbusters got quickly replaced by low-budget "guy makes a contraption in his garage" videos, while animation is more commercial up-front. It's funny seeing youtube channels with "pilot episodes".

Categorizing "indie" vs "AA" animation probably looks a lot different though.

GunTurtle @gunturtle.bsky.social · 12/05/2026
My heuristic for whether a game is "really indie" is whether the developers are full-time or everyone on a project has day jobs/contracting. It's arbitrary, but it at least distinguishes studios that are called "indie" today that would've just been regular game studios in 2010.

Very funny to see a boxing anime open with the protagonist walking into a run-down town accompanied by an Morricone-esque tune. The Wikipedia entry for "Spaghetti Western" says a third of Italian movie production was westerns in 1968 (when this show aired), so I guess it makes sense.

The compositing and drawing quality are really impressive, though I doubt the show looks like that for its entire run (the cross hatching?! the shadows?!)

Started watching Ashita no Joe. Extremely good first episode! I didn't think 60s TV cartoons were capable of looking so good. Some pretty ambitious character animation, action sequences have good story boards and very distinct drawings.

Started the Witch Hat Atelier anime. I feel like I've seen a number of anime that imitate the "Ged summons the shadow" scene from Wizard of Earthsea, but changed so the protagonist's mistake is from pure stupidity rather than being a showoff (eg: Fullmetal Alchemist). Curious why that is.

Cowboy Bebop and the Adam West Batman show both had a four-bar blues tune for their theme songs- surely somebody has made this mashup.

Semi-related: Controller manufacturers need to give up on d-pads. I have never used a d-pad that was more consistent than separate directional buttons. Misinputs are a constant issue in 2D games, and 3D games only use the d-pad as an extra set of face buttons. Gaming's biggest UX failure.

The lack of any modular/customization features seems like a big downside, higher-end 8bitdo cost $60 and have digital/analog trigger toggles. The steam controller's analog triggers are a terrible feature for all of the games I play, and support for back paddles is gonna be fiddly for years.

Very intrigued by this thing. Mainstream adoption of gyro + trackpad input is good, but whenever I've held the Steam Deck (which has very similar controls) my first thought is "wow, this is not comfortable at all".

I feel like the greatest strength of Splatoon's co-op mode is how laser focused it is on arcade PvE gameplay, with no itemization/skill tree systems. Kinda funny seeing Nintendo go the opposite direction and release multiple iterations of "Vampire Survivors in Splatoon".

I think it's hard for me to explain what specifically reads as "game-y" though; JoJo has a lot of fights between characters with abstract powers, but the series predates online gaming by a lot.

GunTurtle @gunturtle.bsky.social · 12/04/2026
I agree. Isekai is definitely a good example, but I feel like there's a general trend of video game-inspired action in post-2000 manga/anime; fights in late Hunter x Hunter have a focus on ability cooldowns and status effects that reads similar to how people talk about MMOs or MOBAs now.

GunTurtle @gunturtle.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Togashi's work is interesting because it follows a very clear martial arts->games trajectory. Early Yu Yu Hakusho is about a guy going into the mountains and learning martial arts from a wise old master; Hunter X Hunter is about a kid getting trapped in a video game and grinding for 100 levels.

GunTurtle @gunturtle.bsky.social · 11/04/2026
Kinda curious about what the history of video game influences on action manga/anime looks like. I feel like there's a lot of martial arts movie-adjacent tropes that have been replaced by more game-y ideas, but a lot of that must be confirmation bias.

I remember "Cells at Work" being popular a few years ago. It was an edutainment anime about anthropomorphic immune system cells getting in violent brawls with viruses.

GunTurtle @gunturtle.bsky.social · 02/04/2026
The amount of pop science in shonen manga/anime has me kinda curious about whether edutainment is underutilized for teen demographics. Satoru Gojo can explain to 13 year olds what an asymptote is, could he explain derivatives?

JJK S3 finale was awesome. Genuinely love how in-your face the show's CGI sequences are, lots of very artificial demoscene-ish effects- it's a good contrast with some of the more loose/expressionistic 2D animation in the series.

I was kinda lukewarm on Fire Punch because the last ~30 chapters are just about the main guy being sad and making terrible choices, without any good supporting characters. Kinda maddening seeing Chainsaw Man have a similar conclusion but 3 times as long and with even weaker characters.
010
GunTurtle @gunturtle.bsky.social · 24/03/2026
Chainsaw man over. I think the ending is interesting, but it would be better if the past 100 chapters of the series were fun to read.

It's a little frustrating to have so many subtitles during these sequences, but I don't think it's strictly a localization issue (unlike scenes with a lot of on-screen text in S3E2/E3). If these exposition dumps were read in english I don't think I'd really absorb them either.

Kinda curious why Jujutsu Kaisen S3 has so much narration over its biggest action cuts. I don't think I've seen a single action anime that does this so much.

The CICADAMATA demo is good. Generally not huge on combo meter games but this one's fun, benefits a lot from how short the levels are. Took a minute to figure out the way to get high scores is to attack an enemy as much as possible without killing it rather than just shooting it in the face.

Every project written in Nim is heavily dependent on 'fieldPairs', a standard library macro with very little documentation besides this ominous warning: "Has a bug that affects symbol binding in the loop body."

JJK S3 good this week. The rotoscope sequence is clever, very impressed by how varied the show's dialogue-heavy scenes are.

JJK S3 preview is very good. Pulls a lot of interesting ideas from exposition-heavy material (the will reading scene with the swaying ceiling light is cool). Lots of clever uses of 3DCG, I really liked the bridge sequence. Giggling and clapping whenever Gosso does a weird fisheye shot.

I see a lot of game developers grumble about how "metroidvania" or "roguelike" are bad genre descriptors, but I feel like "wizardrylike" would be a way more coherent descriptor for games with character sheets and turn-based combat than "role playing game".

Doom is a JRPG 1. a simplified highly derived form of ultima and wizardry 2. damage calculations and enemy behaviours are all determined by dice rolls 3. a straightforward power progression structure over complex character building
