It feels like they wanted to call this "Bag Man" but couldn't get the trademark department to clear it.

It sounds increasingly like you *like* staying at home but feel vaguely guilty about it, so you're trying to find excuses why it's actually your only choice. If that's the case, that's fine, no one's going to force you to go out and play.

I mean, I usually walk with at least one other person and we don't do it in stony silence. I'm not a big group socializing sort but we do go to an open mic once a week. We spend maybe $20 on coffee over a whole evening of hanging out, being entertained, and playing cards.

When I lived in areas that got snow there were free local cross-country trails, though, so I do have to add the "downhill" qualifier there. It was never my sport but I knew people who really enjoyed it.

Downhill skiing is a victim of its own success. There aren't any more ski resorts than there were 20 years ago, the season keeps shrinking, but more people want to ski. Supply/demand.

I go for a walk with my wife nearly every evening, whether it's raining or not. There is no bad weather, just bad clothing.

I'm amused by the apparent idea that people in cold weather climates just abandon the outdoors entirely in the winter.

So many people don't remember what it was like pre-ACA.

Broke the float for the coffee level gauge while cleaning the tank, but fortunately the MEL says the day can continue without it.
A coffee maker with a piece of tape labeled "INOP" over the coffee level gauge.

Wild to see a video of fish reacting to the earthquake yesterday! Thanks @ptdefiancezoo.bsky.social! How did YOU react? Did you Drop, Cover, and Hold On?

This is pretty funny. Photographer asks ChatGPT to invert his film negative scans and correct the white balance. Instead, it invents a whole new photo. www.reddit.com/r/AnalogComm...

He doesn't really. He's never even taken a suborbital hop on one of his own rockets. He prefers to have other people take the risks.

You can still build websites like this and they can look good. There's even a niche genre of locally-hosted CMS applications that will automatically generate and upload static HTML if you don't want to do it by hand. Publii is one. Websites like this are FAST and don't get overwhelmed by bots.

A lot of Disney stuff around that time suffered from tone problems. There was a desire to go more dark with things and then they'd chicken out and pull their punches. It was a downside of being seen as a "family" entertainment company; they got complaints about anything too intense for 8 year olds.

Cygnus is still one of the most beautiful starship models ever filmed.

Have you ever read the novelization by Alan Dean Foster? He treats it as straight horror and discards the comic relief elements in the movie. I think it's a big improvement.

Did he get one of those weird UK/Commonwealth divorce settlements where he's legally obligated to keep a certain income level? It's very strange from a US perspective, since cash alimony payments haven't been a thing here for years, only child support.

The phrase "statistical impossibility" is always a sign someone is talking out their ass. In statistics things can never be impossible, only improbable.

In general there's been a trend toward plans providing trans coverage, because it's not that expensive. There just aren't that many trans people.

The Final Peckening @gull.us · 26/09/2026
There are also state laws that require certain coverage levels. They're allowed to require more than federal law, they just can't require less. (I'm oversimplifying a little, but this is generally true.)

In general, HRT in the US doesn't have a lot of gatekeeping around it compared to other places, at least for adults.

Canada's system is single payer per province.

Yeah, states have wildly different rules for that and they don't fall on clean blue/red lines. Some states still have a publication requirement.

Actually I should say "Advocate," one word. The Advocate is a completely different news site.

The Final Peckening @gull.us · 26/09/2026
Too true. But I think people are at least aware that, say, California is a better place for trans people than Texas. I get the impression that all tends to get mashed together in the minds of overseas audiences.

Bluesky is a terrible place to get trans news, unfortunately. You're better off with almost any LGBTQ news website. There's too much of a culture here of creating feelings of helplessness to cultivate followers. I like The Advocate, they're not perfect but they're at least serious about it.

I don't think people in the UK really understand federalism and how it affects individual rights from state to state.

The Final Peckening @gull.us · 25/09/2026
Bluesky's lack of an algorithmic feed (there's the Discover tab, but most people avoid it) meant that it took a while to build up at network sufficient to inject stuff you wouldn't seek out on your own. And then the lack (until recently) of a way to filter reposts meant there was no avoiding it.

I think this is going to make Ray-Bans terminally uncool. I've known people who had to switch frames because the ones they were wearing kept being mistaken for pervert glasses. Pity, it's a brand with a storied history. "You got your hair slicked back and those Wayfarers on, baby"

Elon has a lot of money, but propping up a whole film studio single-handedly might break even him.

A player actually tried that recently, as a political stunt, but the WNBA wasn't interested in playing ball. So to speak.

I'm mostly just amused that the "I didn't change, the party left me" trope is now happening on the Republican side.

The language humanizing them has two goals: - Pumping the stocks of the companies that make them - Making them seem independent so companies don't bear responsibility for their actions. You're falling for an attempt to work the refs.

This is to say that Tommy Tuberville erred in bringing up furries in his rant about trans people. Furries are inherently ridiculous. You cannot seem dignified while ranting about furries. Furries know this better than anyone.

There's a flub in political optics I call the "muffler problem." Many years ago Democrats were doing a press conference explaining that Republican tax cuts gave the rich enough to buy a car, and the middle class enough to buy a muffler. Problem: you cannot look dignified while holding a muffler.

People can of course focus on whatever they want, but if recent years have taught us anything it's that the courts are susceptible to cultural pressures and the black letter of the law doesn't always prevail.

In theory. This is new so we have little in the way of court cases to know if their deflection strategy will work.
