Stable carbon isotopes from #Mesolithic hazelnuts from 6 Danish sites show that 83% of source hazels grew under open or semi-open conditions - in contrast to classic closed-forest expectations🔆🍃Thx to Laila Rehmeier & @felixthehauskat.bsky.social for leading!⬇️ #Palaeoecology #Archaeology #Forests

An unusually large #microburin from the Late #Mesolithic. How do you photograph microlithic armatures while still bringing out their surface relief? Thoughts and tips, Mesolithic folks? It’s not as straightforward as it might seem… #archaeology @umr5608traces.bsky.social @eveha.bsky.social

A view from inside a Late #Mesolithic cave, looking out. A still rather nebulous experiment in 3D archaeological representation; somewhere between documentation and trying to recover a sense of place. heavily decimated for testing purposes Still quite a bit of work to do.
3D photogrammetric view from inside a karst cave, looking towards the entrance. Rough, irregular cave walls frame a dark triangular opening, beyond which several slender tree trunks are visible in daylight. The foreground and walls have a strongly faceted appearance because the 3D model has been heavily decimated for testing.

“Pointe batârde”. It’s not always easy to photograph armatures. Late #Mesolithic @umr5608traces.bsky.social @eveha.bsky.social

A Late #Mesolithic bone awl discovered in 2023 at Grotte des Jonquilles (Lot, France). Work in progress! @eveha.bsky.social @umr5608traces.bsky.social @occitanie.bsky.social
Close-up of a Late Mesolithic bone awl standing upright in cave sediment during excavation. A modern wooden toothpick stands a few centimetres behind it, and a 10 cm archaeological scale lies in the foreground. The awl was photographed in situ before removal.

Good eyes and lots of patience required today! Sorting 2mm sieve fractions to find Belloisian backed bladelets and tiny micro-flakes. 🔍✨ Final #Palaeolithic (Belloisian). Work in progress 🕵️ @eveha.bsky.social @umr5608traces.bsky.social #Lithics #Flint #HunterGatherers

Illustration based on the Mesolithic burial at Gøngehusvej 7 in Vedbæk, Denmark.
A Stone Age woman dressed in leather and fur clothing is standing sideways. Her headwear is decorated with the bill and feathers of a great crested grebe. She also wears a necklace made of teeth of several animal species. A pair of deer hooves is hanging below the necklace.
