I actually think a major thing that unites a lot of liberals is that they think they're smarter than most people and uniquely positioned to understand the complex reasons why they should be in charge and others should keep their heads down

People have been trying this line for years. And not just with Palestine. There's always someone who will claim you're not smart enough to understand why oppression is actually natural and just.

Every time I see this guy's name, I'm reminded of how a bunch of tech workers (not billionaires) banded together to raise gobs of money for his first race in 2018 in the name of saving democracy or something

I mean, this is trivially true re: climate change and appropriating capital gains through government funded mortgages, low interest rates, and financialization. The actual unspoken difference between his view and mine is what should replace the "high modern nation-state"

Endnotes said that (extreme simplification), to escape the declining rate of profit, the motive force of capital no longer resided in sites of production but in the logistical networks connecting them. Now it's retreating further into a thousand long-shot bets on world domination

It doesn't matter who is perpetrating the violence at the border, whether it's the USSR or Bernie Sanders. Both are abhorrent. Every border implies the violence of its maintenance.

Do you think it's possible that there could be an Israeli constituency that voluntarily, without external pressure, decides to grant sovereignty to a Palestinian state? I don't understand why it's worth making apologia for center-right parties if we know this route is a nonstarter in the first place

It's so silly how what every conservative points to as "woke" tyranny they barely survived are examples of corporations running scared from the latest mass uprising, desperately falling over themselves to say whatever nonsense they think might placate the streets so their windows don't get busted.

There's always people who will be like "you need to study the history of the I/P conflict before you can have an opinion" and you know it's a bad faith deflection because learning the history makes everything look so much worse for Israel!

The image of brown people crossing borders is unacceptable to even European liberals. When their beliefs are really tested, they will reflexively implement the same kind of nativist border regimes as the fascist right. Obama, Biden, Sanchez, and Merkel all failed this test. It will happen again.

Attempts by liberal regimes to lessen border restrictions will only lead to an increase of people crossing the border, taking advantage of a perception of temporarily reduced restrictions.

Do not use Minneapolis organizers as the peaceful good example so you can smear the Prairieland defendants for their “violent” tactics. Alex Pretti was also armed. The MN 15 are being indicted for related tactics and strategy. So much is wrong with this piece, but that especially sticks in my craw.
Screenshot of text: The Prairieland activists decided to meet the administration on the field the administration picked and deliver them the fight the administration wanted. By contrast the ordinary citizens of Minneapolis, and their resolute nonviolence, even in the face of brutal murders committed by agents of the state, have done far more to change national opinion on the mass deportation machine. They chose not to give the administration the fight it wanted. They met physical force with soul force, as Dr. King put it. Forget about the morality. The tactic was effective.

I spoke to Lindsey Graham for 20 minutes today. He sounds active, wandering the untrod path, and wearing the chains he forged in life. He says the eternity of lonely darkness ahead doesn’t trouble him, because his folly blazes clear and the grim reminder will walk beside him always. Still sharp!

True, but my understanding is that governments are pretty sparing with their use of zero-day exploits to remotely compromise phones, because once the vulnerability is identified, it's often fixed by Apple/Google. That stuff is usually used in individually targeted attacks & not general surveillance.

A federal court has punished Texas ICE demonstrators with decades in prison. This is dark news not just for them but for anyone who may want to register political dissent.

The Prairieland trial was not an isolated case. It was a test. Judge Reed O'Connor passed by railroading a bunch of people showing solidarity with detainees by handing them multi-decade prison sentences. Now the same judge will oversee a sham federal case attacking healthcare for trans people

i wish more of the reporting on the prairieland trial/sentencing would give the context of the july 4 noise demo—like who was inside prairieland detention center and why. i tried to include a little in my story, but i was working quickly so it's just a sketch. hotel-florida.ghost.io/the-seeds-of...
On July 4, 2025, a group of people gathered in the dark outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, Texas, and set off fireworks—a noise demonstration meant to carry to the people locked inside. That summer, less than six months into the second Trump presidency, ICE was detaining people faster than it could house them; Prairieland, built for around five hundred, was running well over capacity. Among the people locked inside that night was Leqaa Kordia, a Palestinian woman from New Jersey who had been arrested at a 2024 Columbia protest against the war in Gaza and then, a year later, detained over an expired student visa—what her lawyers called retaliation for her activism. The government had also accused her of providing "material support" to a terrorist group, pointing to money she'd sent to relatives in Gaza; an immigration judge found no evidence of it. She had been at Prairieland since March, sleeping on the floor of an overcrowded room because there weren't enough beds. She was still there on the Fourth of July—one of the people the noise was meant to reach.

Fifteen people in the Twin Cities were recently indicted on federal charges for resisting ICE's invasion last winter. This is what will happen to them if we don't respond with courage and force.
