Classical Greek glass ring embedded with a thin gold foil representation of an alighting winged Nike, personification of Victory.

Ancient artisans placed an intricately cut or stamped piece of gold leaf or foil directly onto a base layer of glass, then sealed it under a protective layer of clear or translucent molten glass. This method represents the earliest precursor to the famous Hellenistic "sandwich" gold-glass technique. Scholars believe the technique originated during the 4th to 3rd centuries BCE in Greece, with early milestones linked to the workshops of masters like Phidias at Olympia.
