Most bacteria generate ROS inside their cell but E. faecalis generates ROS outside its cell. Our study shows this process generates hydrogen peroxide at the wound interface. This oxidative stress triggers the unfolded protein response (UPR) in the host skin cells, stopping them from migrating.

📢 Our new preprint is out! We show how the common gut bacterium 𝘌. 𝘧𝘢𝘦𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴 stops wound healing. It uses a metabolic pathway, extracellular electron transport (EET), to stress host cells, halting their migration. Watch WT bacteria (orange) stop the cells while the mutant (blue) doesn't!

2/🧵 #WoundInfections are a major concern, causing delays in healing and significant health issues. We wanted to understand the role of E. faecalis in these infections. 🤔 To do this, we used #scRNA-seq to analyze over 23,000 cells in infected and uninfected wounds. 🧬🔬
