Yes, I do think that’s more common now. And I meant emotional rather than emotive - a better word for it!

I’d have to think about that one! Probably her relational and emotive approach to animal ethics. It’s compelling but was also ahead of its time.

I believe the earliest availability I know of is the ebook on Nov 12!

Thank you! I have a little bit on the origin story in the book, but I first encountered Midgley’s work over 20 years ago in grad school. I appreciated how integrative and sensible it was on the topics that I was interested in - human nature, morality, animals, nature, science, etc. And enjoyable!

Hi, Amy! I believe the ebook version actually comes out Nov 12 and the print version on Dec 10. I think that’s the case internationally, though I’m sure things could always change slightly!

Yes, very interesting, and some overlaps with some conversations I had with Midgley. Thank you for sharing this well-written piece!

The book also presents my journey with Midgley and the philosophical companionship that developed along the way. I am grateful for that journey, and glad to be able to share some of that experience with readers in this book. Feel free to DM me if you’d like to talk more about it!

Mary Midgley on What Matters offers a conversational exploration of Midgley’s life and philosophy. It is a unique book based on our yearly interviews from 2011–18, and a great opportunity to read about Midgley’s thoughts, reminiscences, and concerns in her final years.

Mary Midgley saw philosophy as mapping relationships between fields. Though she never fully critiqued economics, Nat Dyer argues her ideas on myths, reductionism & ecology offer a powerful challenge to today’s economic orthodoxy. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FYNCodkhbrk
