TCM has a future at Skydance, which is good news. And it will be part of the film group, which suggests a similar structure to its niche at Warner Bros Discovery after Scorsese, Spielberg and PTA saved it from Zaslav's cost-cutting. In the short term, all is well. But deadline.com/2026/10/turn...

The MAGA regime recently killed the largest ancient 250 year old “Grandmother” Cottonwood tree in Arizona’s indigenous territory just to expand the orange felon’s fucking wall. I’ll never forgive anyone who chose this evil.

Ah the fun we had! Now, I've seen "Chemistry Sets" in the stores and the box has a label the screams: NO CHEMICALS INSIDE".

A lifer for me, interrupted club-moss, with spore cones. Seen hiking to the Au Sable Lighthouse.

Something very dangerous has happened to the Republican mind. We are on the precipice of a Rwanda situation.

I went down the rabbit hole! The term "roped" looks like it comes from boxing (not hemp farming). Being "on the ropes" or Mohamed Ali's term "rope-a-dope". The term worked its way into stoner slang, to indicate an unexpectedly strong or potent effect.

120

Gene @gsanta5.bsky.social · 04/10/2026

Yes, it's a very old term for cannabis. It dates back to when farm workers would smoke the very low quality leaves and buds in the rope industry.

Gene @gsanta5.bsky.social · 04/10/2026

Saw it in 3D in our collage theater. Many of us were sufficiently "roped". The audience broke out in applause during the fireplace scene in the beginning.

She's a facinating character. Some of her adventures resemble how hippies traveled around on their magic buses, or the Beats migrating between NYC, Denver and SF--leaving unpaid hotel and restaurant bills. But I think she became what we'd call conservative, later in life.

Gene @gsanta5.bsky.social · 04/10/2026

The fun and games going on in this film more closely resemble the true goings on with Mary Shelley and her gang, than the drawing room niceties depicted in the intro of "Bride of Frankenstein".

I had a similar experience at a friend's house, where some teenage classmates of her son were visiting. We planned to watch Psycho. The young'uns decided to stay and watch it with us. They were captivated and let out amazement at the reveal. Kids hardened on The Evil Dead and Freddy Kruger!

Just goes to show how inspired directing, a creepy story, shoe-string but creative FX, and kinky costumes can synergize into a fun and very cool movie. Fully deserves its cult status.

I purchased the "wood burned" box set, that has the truncated US release, as well as the restored version. I'm in error about the music. I purchased that separately. I purchased them online. I think the box set is available on the used market.

Deserves its reputation as the Citizen Caine of horror movies. I have the wooden boxed set which includes a CD of music & lots of background info.

ST rarely handled this well. I should say they handled it badly. If you know anything about it, or had the misfortune of dealing with it personally, this episode is near impossible to watch.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS: A federal judge just HALTED the destruction of Big Bend. This is a massive victory for the landowners, local communities, and everyday Texans who stood up to protect one of our state's greatest treasures. The fight isn't over, but today, the people won.

Graphic from the Center for Biological Diversity over a scenic view of Big Bend. Large text reads, “MASSIVE WIN FOR BIG BEND.” Below, it says a federal judge has frozen all destruction throughout the Big Bend region until the project’s legality can be determined in court. The graphic adds that the Center will continue fighting to save Big Bend and asks supporters to join them.

Considering how the world turned out, maybe we'd be better off if the Old Ones won.

A brilliant Dean and Begley and a miss cast Sandra. Great title animation. Cool music and sound FX. A decent attemp at bringing HPL to the screen. I liked the subtext of hippies (Old Ones & followers) vs "straight" society (the stuck-up townspeople). I suspect someone was consulted on Neo-paganism.

64 years ago, on the 27th of September 1962, Rachel Carson's book Silent Spring was published. It handled the environmental harm caused by the pesticide DDT and the disinformation spread by the chemical industry. Carson managed to sway public opinion and even policy. #otd #history 🗃️

I was shocked by some medical staff as well. We had a couple who even questioned evolution and the age of the earth. Some of the admin staff had a very tough time convincing them to get the vaccine. A few adamantly refused.
