In Italy’s EU election, abstention passed 50% for the 1st time: not from indifference or circumstance, but from aversion and long-term erosion of trust & efficacy, towards the EU and politics in general. A “no-plot” tale in my new article on Italy’s political disengagement: doi.org/10.1080/2324...

Today & tomorrow Marche votes! Once a left-wing region, it swung right in 2020 with Acquaroli. Dubbed Italy’s “Ohio,” it opens with Aosta Valley an autumn wave of regional contests with national weight. Acquaroli is 1 of 2 FdI governors, same party as PM Meloni. Pre-election polls attached.
Bar chart titled “2025 Marche Regional Election: Pre-election Surveys.” It shows polling results for Acquaroli (right-wing incumbent), Ricci (left-wing challenger), and “Other” candidates across seven surveys from Dec 2024 to Sept 2025. Acquaroli leads in most polls, with support around 50–52%. Ricci ranges between 45–47.5%. “Other” candidates stay low, 2–5%.

The post-electoral honeymoon is over for the Meloni government. A longitudinal survey by Demos shows how Italian trust in the administration has steadily dropped to levels similar to the pre-pandemic Conte II government—markedly lower than during Conte I, post-pandemic Conte II, and Draghi's terms.
Graph displaying Italian trust in the last four governments: Conte I, Conte II, Draghi, and Meloni. Trust in Meloni's government has fallen by 11 percentage points since the start of her tenure, aligning closely with pre-pandemic Conte II levels.
